Title: Why Do We Still Gesticulate When On The Phone ?

Dearest Gesticulateologists,

As a sheepie  I of course luff to gesticulate....out of all the gesturing that I do with my body and extremities, gesticulating is my all time fave.

Look, here I am gesticulating at a tiny cat !

One thing I have noticed........ even when we are on the phone we still gesticulate, !!

why's that then ?...why do we still gesticulate when on the phone ? What's the science behind that ?

The other person can't see ewe !!..unless ewe are standing next to them or in the same room which will make being on the phone to them silly and wrong !

You should see us all in the studio - we gesticulate even more than in normal conversation!

In some countries, people can't drive their cars unless they are gesticulating. I think it has something to do with keeping the battery charged.

I am going to have a bash at this one... and this is just a guess ok.  Body language accounts for a huge proportion of communication. We have evolved to use it alongside speech allowing us to communicate very effectively. It is only very recently, in the context of human evolution, since devices have been invented that allow us to communicate predominantly without visual contact with the intended recipient/s.

I propose that because of this we subconsciously gesticulate when communicating.

Apparently the Italians are pretty adept at gesticulation also, at least that is one of the things they are well known for.  [::)]

In my humble opinion, As Airthumbs says...........I think gesticulating helps us focus what we are saying. So, in addition to helping us assert the meaning visually, I beleive it's a two way steet and that gesticulating may help us pronounce with authoritive erudition....and that's what I have to say about that !  [:)]

I think it was Desmond Morris who pointed out that, during an argument, Venetians will stop another person from arguing by holding their wrists so they can't gesticulate (or other kinds of "atey" things.)

Marshall McLuhan pointed out that Arabs stand close enough to smell who they're talking to and start to gesticulate once they are out of olfactory range.

Perhaps they stand so close that there is no space to gesticulate !

I like speakerphones because they let you gesticulate with both hands (which is particularly useful when the Marketing Department is on the call.)

You can even hit the "mute" button for added effect, but just be careful to check that the little light actually works, and you know which way represents on or off.

I am ashamed to say that I have one of those radio headsets!  It means that I don't get neck ache through crooking the phone between ear and shoulder.  I have never been a fan of speaker-phones.  Whilst I don't gesticulate I do type and surf web

One of our sales techniques at a furniture company was to actually stand up when you speak to someone on the phone using a headset.  This was supposed to make you force them into getting an appointment!!  Thank goodness I have left those awful days behind me.
