Title: Is my keyboard allegric to Bud?
Post by: Geezer on 12/06/2012 07:24:21
Oh calamity!

I managed to knock over a can of the fine Budgeezer ale and, of course, a significant amount of the spillage ended up in my keyboard. (There must be a law that dictates why that always happens - but I digress.)

However, as I know about these computer thingys, I was not overly concerned. I dismantled the keyboard and gave the mechanical bit and the rubber panel beneath it a good decontamination (I washed them in warm water with a touch of detergent). Prest-chango! Keyboard thingy works fine and also looks like new cos all the crud has been removed.

There's only one problem. My computer used to come out of sleep mode as soon as I hit the any key, but now it don't! It only responds when I click the mouse. Weird!

It's sleeping off it's exposure to alcohol [:)]

The device manager is worth a look, (but it may not detect damage to your keyboard) ...

If you've still got mouse action, but a partially knackered keyboard, there is a "virtual" on-screen keyboard built into Windows you can use ...

(and also available for Linux (http://homepage3.nifty.com/tsato/xvkbd/)).

It's tedious to operate but adequate to enable you to go online and order a new keyboard.

[NB: typically such virtual keyboards don't provide protection from software key-logging, they only protect from "inline" hardware key-loggers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_keylogger#Types_of_hardware_keyloggers) ]

You pretty much nailed it RD.

Apparently, the Budgeezer had permeated the Vista operating system to the extent that it forgot it was supposed to "Allow this device to wake the computer"

On Vista it's under Device Mangler - Standard PS/2 Keyboard Properties - Power Management

(I suspect it's because I unplugged the keyboard while the OS was up.)
