Title: How they get the stripes into toothpaste?

The coloured gel is kept in a compartment near the opening of the toothpast tube. When you squeeze the tube, white toothpaste comes out of the top and the colored gel is "striped" onto it through a small opening.

Why thank you very much !!!...you just saved an innocent toothpaste tube from a rather nasty accident with a cleaver !!..thanks.

thats probably a much worse crime that leaving the cap off, so glad your question was answered satisfactorily! your wife must appreciate it.

Although in the 1960s the stripes were mixed in using a gadget at the top of the tube this is no longer the case.
We theorised and then decided to find out for sure.  The stripes are extruded into the tube, in a sort of maltese cross formation.
