Again I will bring up the US TV series "The Wire". There are parts where the swearing is the only dialogue I can understand.

My experience would suggest that swearing is more widespread in the UK because there is not the same degree of prudishness that there once was, and that still exists in the USA. I don't think there is much difference with the working man on the building site, but I perceive that there is more of a difference in office culture. Americans are generally more polite and take more care not to offend. The British are not so, but, on the other hand, are more used to it and not so easily offended by swearing.

I think Graham is right when he makes the point that Brits are less offended at swearing. I dont particularly like to hear a conversation where every other word is an expletive, but in general swearing doesnt bother me a jot. In fact a well placed swear word can highlight a point in a way no amount of other hyperbole can.

Here is a little history- do not view if easily offended!

In all seriousness, I very rarely swear at all. I just don't need to, because I can insult someone by using a more technical language. I think that much of the swearing is down to a level of intellect and capacity to use a language. If **** is your only option, you're not going to call someone a monosyllabic cretinous imbecile whose simian features allow them to tie their shoelaces without bending over, are you?

However, give me a hammer and a nail, and I last about three seconds.

All well and good to call someone a 'monosyllabic cretinous imbecile whose simian features allow them to tie their shoelaces without bending over', but the question is will they understand what you are trying to say? They might think you are paying them a compliment! And besides that, why waste your breath on such a stupid f***er!

Hammer & nail!!! Because of my natural shake, the air turns blue when I'm wiring a plug!!! As for putting a screwdriver into the head of a screw, especially with my left hand, unsteadied by my other hand..... well the language is enough to curl your ears!

My father had the same affliction. Consequently, no DIY job could be considered done until it had been called a f****** B*****D a goodly number of times.

I think that it's also a good part of anger management to give some inanimate object a damn good kicking and swearing. I give my PC a daily workout.

To call some people simian would be a compliment....

But I dont tend to use sweating to insult people, I like ou, prefer to use more irritating means. I do have a knack for winding up people I dislike...  [:)]

However, when I am driving, the men are all from doubtful parentage, and the women are all half alseep ladies who have multiple sexual partners, or words to that effect  [:)]

I'm afraid it's true. The educated brits among us however do not use expletives to insult or offend other people - you can safely assume the recipient would be as desensitised to it as the originator.

My favourite word is b@ll@cks, as it sounds so rounded  [:D] And preceding it with c@@ty for those special occasions that deserve extra venom. Swearing at other drivers is a particular pleasure.

For some proper british swearing, only Derek and Clive do it justice!

Stupind????
A oilman - An oilman
Pu****** - The correct spelling is Pu***^**(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Flol%2F22.gif&hash=0dbbfa5c5f2f0699fdde5497f2b1c092)

F******G FOG

Yes, an oilman - as in a person who is in the oil business.

As for "stupind," that was a test to see if you were literate. Most English people can't spell. Example " 'ow 're ya, mate?" This is what one fights when the colony vastly exceeds the "mother-land" in education and intelligence. The latter happens because the population in the colony isn't as in-bread as a population on a small home island.

As for "Pu******" and your spelling of it as Pu***^** -- That is just absurd!!! You are using the archaic Saxon noun, derived from the Old High German root Pu* - **^, that hasn't been in use since Chaucer's time.  It isn't the approved spelling in the Oxford Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language!!

You can't even speak (or spell) the mother tongue!!!

So - J**^# your ********* and *****(0** the b******** ** and stop to****** little girls!

FOG Indeed, Sir, FOG indeed!

I come from Macclesfield. In the north of England swear words are punctuation and exclamation marks. Some swear words are used affectionately like Ay up you old b****r. Bloody is the most used word in an average conversation in Macclesfield. My Mum who didn't swear much used to swear in triplets. For example "Bloody, so**ing rotten hell" and "Damn, Blast and B****r it"
