Title: Why does my cat go mad after using the litter tray?
Post by: Richard Townsend on 20/07/2009 15:30:03
Richard Townsend  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris,

When our cat uses his litter box for his poo, he then seems to go bananas for a few minutes.I have also noticed that there is a lightening of my mood after passing stools. Is there some form of chemical release into the brain that does this?

I hope you can help.

My cats do the same thing but I'm not sure we will ever be able to completely decode what they are thinking. Perhaps they are so relieved to finish their business that they have to express it to the world.

I do remember reading an article a while back about cats releasing energy by going nuts for a few minutes (often referred to as the "cat crazies"). This is because cats are animals that spend up to 17 hours a day sleeping and lounging around. It was hypothesized that their random craziness is natures way of keeping them fit and healthy. Apparently it is more common in house cats as they are the laziest. I thought it was an interesting theory but there was nothing specific about going crazy after using the toilet.

I will try to find the article.
