Now that's a topic for debate in a whole plethora of different societies...

From a medical/biological point of view there would not be terminations allowed if the baby was considered ' alive/sentient' from day one...but the fact remains that terminations are allowed as far as 24 weeks (I think)..here in the Uk anyway.....that still does not indicate whether the foetus is alive or not though at that time !!

There are people who will attest in the strongest possible terms that life is made the moment the sperm breaks the egg barrier.........it's a real contentious issue.....plug this query on a pro-life forum and god knows what kind of responses you'll get !!...well...actually it's obvious what kind of answers you'll get...they'll most certainly say YES...alive from day one.

Men are the same as women.... just inside out !!

Well, there's alive, and then there's human.
The sperm and the egg are alive (in the way an amoeba is alive... they're cells) before they even meet... but when the result of the fusion becomes human, that's a whole different kettle of fish. And to be honest I think it's largely one for the philosophers.
