Technology / Can cars go backwards as fast as they can go forward?
« on: 14/02/2012 04:19:20 »
And if no, why not? [;D]

2
Technology / How does a car measure how much petrol it has left in the tank?
« on: 27/01/2012 12:05:00 »
When I am nearly out of petrol (gas) I often see the yellow petrol tank symbol telling me to fill up the car, but I have noticed that when I park on a gradient for a while, the little symbol is gone but after a bit of driving it comes up again. This made me curious as to how the car detects the amount of petrol, and why this is affected by parking on a slope.

Technology / Speakers that can act like a radio?
« on: 15/09/2009 06:39:58 »
The speakers on my computer look like this

The other day, I noticed that when I went to adjust the volume, I could just detect the sound of a radio station playing in the background. Strangely enough, this was the same station that I usually have on, but the radio wasn't on or anything. I am wondering how my speakers can pick up the radio channel when I touch the volume adjusting knob? If I remove my fingers, the faint sound is gone. It even happens when the computer is off so it's definitely not coming from there.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Is it possible to kill/squash a fly with compressed air?
« on: 30/08/2009 00:15:10 »
As I was really bored, I tried to squash/kill this insect by blowing on it [:X], suffice to say, it did not work and the poor thing just flew off. But maybe it would be possible to do it with compressed air?
Whatjathink?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Is it possible to ride a giraffe?
« on: 28/08/2009 04:50:37 »
Have people done this sort of thing before?
Will the giraffe hold or will you just end up on your backside?

9
Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Will you see the headlights of a car travelling at light speed?
« on: 09/08/2009 08:54:47 »
Someone asked me this the other day and I couldn't really find an answer. If a car was travelling at the speed of light, then it turned on it's headlights, will an observer ever see it?

Geek Speak / Problem with viewing pictures on screen
« on: 07/08/2009 05:27:56 »
Two days ago, I started having trouble viewing some pictures on the internet, for example on Google, all I see is this:

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

and when I open a new tab, instead of having a picture of the webpage, this is what I get

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

On some websites I visit at the top it says:

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Which leads me to downloading Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.32.18
After I did that, I was still unable to see the images [:-\]
I don't get it, it was perfectly fine before but now it's very weird, even after I installed the Flash Player it still didn't work.
By the way, if I use the internet as the 'Administrator' everything is fine, no problems at all, but for the two users, neither one works properly.  [:(]
Anyone give me a hand?

Physiology & Medicine / What's making that noise when you swallow?
« on: 03/08/2009 03:42:42 »
You'll notice this if you gulp some water down very quickly, your throat makes a 'gulg, gulg' kind of sound, why does this happen? What is making that noise?

Guest Book / Should we be worried?
« on: 28/07/2009 11:03:13 »
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the LARGE amount of registers lately?
Previously, the average registerations per day was somewhere around 5.1-5.2, now it is 6.4!! That is BIG jump.
I don't think they are interested in posting anything...

Their names say it all

General Science / Why is the top shirt button hole horizontal but the rest are vertical?
« on: 04/07/2009 09:29:02 »
Here is a dress shirt:

Notice that the top button hole is horizontal?  [:o]
But the rest are all vertical? I have just noticed this the other day. [:-X]
Is there a reason for this? Well, actually, there must be, but what is it?  [:-\]

Technology / Question about microwave and cooking pasta.
« on: 04/07/2009 02:46:39 »
I was just making some macaroni & cheese in the microwave, and I had to pause the microwave half way through for about 2 minutes to go do something. When I came back and resumed the cooking, I found that the viewing window was all fogged up with condensation. So I opened the microwave, wiped the viewing window clear and then resumed the cooking, after that, the window did not have condensation (at least, not nearly as much as before) on it, even when the sauce was bubbling away. Why is this? Is it because when the microwave is on, it can remove the air inside and when it stops it cannot?  [:-\]

Technology / Does my food cook faster in the microwave if it is placed in the middle?

Technology / Why do glasses still help you see better when you flip them around?

Why do glasses still help you see better when you flip them around (when you look through them front on)? Is this bad for my eyes?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Who is up for a challenge?
« on: 31/05/2009 04:15:59 »
It's a bit quite at the moment so how about having a physics problem of the week?  [:-X]
Here's an easy one for you:
A man spins a 0.5 kg stone on the end of a 2 meter string which has a breaking strain of 25 N. He whirls the stone 2.45 m above the ground. Eventually the string breaks and the stone flies off horizontally. Ignoring gravity  [:I] air resistance, how far does the stone land from his feet?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / What do you think caused this cat to grow wings?
« on: 29/05/2009 06:07:31 »
Cat in China grows a pair of wings

Feline was born normal but developed appendages at age 1, family says

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a … cat?

A kitty in Chongqing, China, is getting some extra-special attention these days: The furry feline has developed wings! Though born looking completely normal, once the cat hit the age of 1, he began growing wing-shaped appendages on either side of his spine, the U.K.'s Daily Mail reports.

While some think the bony limbs may be a mutation of some kind — or even a Siamese twin growing inside the cat — others speculate it's a genetic change perhaps caused by chemicals ingested by the kitty's mother while she was pregnant.

According to the cat's owners, he doesn't seem to mind his new wings — and he’s loving the attention he's received because of them!

Strange as the case may sound, winged felines are not unheard of. Back in August 2008, the U.K. Telegraph reported that tomcats in China's Sichuan province developed wing-like growths on their backs.

Veterinary experts said then that despite the hard inner core, the "wings" don't harm cats' quality of life or safety. According to the Telegraph's report, scientists believe the appendages developed due to grooming habits, a genetic defect or a hereditary skin condition.
