Title: Why Does Cursing Increase The Ability To Endure Pain ?
Post by: neilep on 18/01/2012 17:28:48
Dearest Painologists and Mr Osbourne,

As a sheepy I of course am also an angel and never profane in any way at all ever !...and that's the f&&**#@g truth !

However, I recently read that if one does not normally swear (like angelic moi) then cursing whilst in pain will enable ewe to endure the pain further !!

As a firm believer in empirical study I undertook to undergo a rigorous experiment to prove this................. and as ewe can see it failed miserabley as I felt no pain at all and did not need to swear at all...so...no luck there !

Here I Be Failing By Feeling No Pain And Therefore Not Swearing At All !

What I plan to do is conduct a similar experiment with my neighbour at 3am tomorrow morning whilst he offers no protestation under sedation !...I have high expectation of success.

In the mean time....Do Ewe Know Why Swearing Will Enable Ewe To Endure Pain for longer ?................... bear in mind as mentioned above...one must not normally be of a sweary type for this to work !...So Mr Osbourne...if ewe are reading this ewe need not answer !

Ta

hugs and shmishes

mwah mwah mwah

I don't know the answer - but can I request an ovine clarification?  Is Mr Osbourne that you refer to - the Ozzie of that ilk who swears a lot, or the George who is causing a lot of pain?

Edit

Just read George Osborne's name on the news - oops no U

Why yes..yes of course.....silly me...I should have noticed my faux pas . I am of course referring to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.....not the choir boy singer from Black Sabbath....gawwwd bless him !!  [;)]....and with that Ovine clarification ewe can see that I am to be trusted and depended on for accuracy in all that I say here. I am a pedant when it comes to detail !

Well, he said as he stubbed his toe on the desk leg and issuing a torrent of verbal blasphemy and cussing, I'm not so sure it helps endure pain, but for some strange reason, it feels good.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going to take an axe to that f*&^$$:ing, p@"£$y, sh(8^%-ar~**|, cr^%* featured desk leg.

RIGHT YOU B*^**%D, you've been f@:><ing asking for this.........................

I would guess its competing neurological pathways - outgoing motor neurons vs incoming sensation ones. Why do you shake your finger after you bang it with a hammer or jump up and down if you get kicked? Or maybe the emotional response of anger  triggers the release of something in the body that relieves pain or prepares you to protect yourself from more of it, as if you were being attacked by an animal.

Thanks Cheryl Your comments sound perfectly reasonable.Perhaps all the shaking, jumping and cussing may also serve to preoccupy the mind and just give the appearance of a numbed sensation !
