Title: Knife, Fork, Spoon
Post by: paul.fr on 19/03/2007 19:27:42
which way do you organise you cutlery? does this say anything about you?

could we learn something about people by the way they arrange their cutlery? for instance did "bad people" like Stalin put the spoon first? now that would be stupid

I always eat at the coffee table in the front room. Wouldn't be able to eat at the dinner table as my housemates pulled it apart so we would have more room.
But I use my right hand to cut and my left hand to feed myself.

But as a kid we always set the table with the fork on the left, knife on the right and the spoon at the top of the table mat

And at this point I have no idea what I am talking about..............I need my straight jacket

Why would anyone put spoons first???  That's just silly! It's knives, forks, butter knives, teaspoons, tablespoons.

The cutlery drawer is for long term storage of cutlery only, and the rapid turnover cutlery never gets to see the inside of a drawer.  Given that, I cannot remember (and cannot be bothered to look right now) which order the cutlery is in there, but if I ever get to put some cutlery in the drawer, I shall see what is already there, and simply place like with like.

As for usage - I am completely ambidextrous (does that mean one is not sure which is right - which is about right) with regard to the matter.

Mine is like Carolns of coarse. Where her teaspoons are is where I keep soup spoons. Thats the only difference . My Good silverware I use all the time I keep at the kitchen table on a table runner. I have 5 Stainless steel pails, each holds the clean dried Utensils. When there are people here, we just take our silverware out as we need them.

I am right handed with everything. I cut my meat with the knife in right hand and fork in left to stableize meat. I am a right handed everything! My left arm is hard to get motivated sometimes..

Now, what do you call a table spoon - a desert spoon, or a serving spoon (then what about pudding spoons and soup spoons)?

Tablespoon is your regular size spoon. teaspoon is the lond long slender handled small scooped spoon for a tall glass, dessert spoon I use table sppoon, don't know is there really is a specific size oe difference. Soup spoons are your bigger scooped spoons that hurt my mouth to try to get in.. My mouth is too narrow.. LOL They are like the size up from the tablespoon.I suspect a pudding spoon is a dessert spoon, who knows maybe they really have one. Then you have serving spoons which are way bigger  some solid some slotted.. etc...LOL Lets not forget Salad forks and dinner forks...LOL so silly eh?????

These days, it seems people are often referring to desert spoons as table spoons, but I was always taught that table spoons were larger than desert spoons, and intended for serving rather than eating.  I think the idea of table spoons goes back to when people did not serve straight out of the pot (most of what we use for serving spoons these days seem to be cooking utensils, or modified versions of them).  The idea of table spoons was when you had a party and placed the food out on the table, you would use table spoons to move the food from the serving dishes (not cooking dishes) to the plate.  I have one old table spoon that used to belong to my grandmother - silver plated, although much of the silver has now erroded off.

Pudding spoons are short handled soup spoons.

Soup spoons are not larger than dessert spoons, only more circular and less elongated.

While you are onto forks - don't forget cake forks, or fish knives, or steak knives, ...
