Title: Ice Cube Flavour from Ice Cube trays !
Post by: neilep on 19/03/2007 15:08:51
Dear Sirs/Madames/Flora & Fauna,

I am extremely wealthy !....and because of my despicable wealth I can afford TWO ice cube trays !

One is your bog standard hard plastic variety which makes wonderful ice cubes worthy of my cocoa cola joy and luff !

The other is one of those rubber jobbies which is very flexible and makes for popping the ice cubes out very easy !

the thing is...the rubber one imparts a ' rubber' flavour  to the ice cubes !!...why is this ?.......is there really rubber ice cube tray luff in my ice cubes !! ?

OOOOH, That does not sound promising... I wonder why that is. Are they new? If so wash them several times and see if that helps.. Now I honestly have never seen a rubber Ice cube tray! LOL Thats new to me, Is it made of the same stuff those rubbery pans and cookware are made from?? The new stuff! Have you seen it?

They look like the same material as the cookware. That you can bake in. Those are kind of cool!! Never seen them before. The rubber ones that is!  I have a ice maker these days so it is at the door upon request, which I have been addicted to I must say!
Do you think it could be something that will disappear with age??( The rubbery taste, and I don't mean your age!) LOL

Growing up on the other part of town to Neil, we can not afford posh rubber ice cube trays  [:-'(]. So i have handy ice cube bags, which are also great for cola.

but i have the last laugh, because mine do not taste of rubber or plastic

I was really hoping that I might have an answer by now.

The rubber ice tray is in perfect condition ...it is not split or ' breaking down '...but the ice from it has a distinct rubbery taste !

Clearly it is picking up some of the rubber stuff!!

Harold Signs Agreement with Lékué of SpainAPRIL 30, 2003 — Harold Import Company has reached an agreement with Lékué of Spain to distribute their flexible silicone bakeware and ice cube trays to the US retail market. Lékué uses a platinum silicone process versus the peroxide silicone process used by certain non-European manufacturers of silicone bakeware. The platinum silicone process removes all residues from the product. Peroxide silicone has a variable percentage of peroxides still present after manufacturing that may affect taste and odor. Lékué's sophisticated manufacturing techniques allow them to use the more expensive platinum silicone and still offer pricing that is at or below the peroxide silicone product. This combination of quality and pricing has allowed Lékué to become the world's largest seller of flexible
silicone bakeware.

So Chances are Neil, that your ice cube trays were probably made in China or elsewhere outside the EU.

Personally I hate silicon trays, you can never get the cubes out and I find that they do smell and taste quite a bit.

Thank you so much Meg ..I really appreciate your answer.

Actually, the rubber/silicon tray was made in Spain..

I think I'll chuck it.....though I doubt I'm being poisoned by it but they taste awful.

Thanks Meg
