Title: Isn't it better to faint, than making all the efforts not to?
Post by: adrian on 15/05/2008 09:26:26
adrian  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi again

This is just wonderful, to have someone to ask all sorts of questions.

Today I have been to a laboratory for some blood analyses. So they took some blood from me. I don't enjoy this even on TV. I am athletic, slim, so I don't have to much blood. I will spare you the details, finally I fainted on pavement. I was already sitting, with some earth where I supposed that my head would fall, so everything was OK.

Question: Isn't it better to faint, rather than making all the efforts not to? Isn't it a natural mechanism to recover? (I also had a very nice dream). Just place the man on a sofa and let him/her faint.

Many thanks,

Adrian

PS: I would have had about 90% chances to start driving after I left the laboratory if I had a car. I was wondering if at least in the UK those who are taking blood from people are informing them that is better not to drive after that.

What do you think?

It is not a normal reaction to faint on a pavement AFTER blood draw for analysis, it's normal for some people to faint WHILE drawing blood (stress, phobia, etc.) - I think you should see a doctor and tell her/him about it. The amount of blood taken in a lab is certainly not enough significant to made one faint in a street after the procedure, doesn't matter if you're slim or not.

I am strong and I feel good, I eat pretty well, I am confident in a marathon with anyone who doesn't do this for a living, I can think pretty clear in long stressful situations, and I'll see the results of my analyses.
I couldn't tell whether my reaction it's psychological or physiological. But do you have any idea about my question?.. Is it better to slap someone, sprinkle water on their face, administer different substances to keep them conscious, instead of letting them faint?
