Title: I don't even think I will contribute here any more
Post by: Mr. Data on 24/07/2011 16:19:52
And the reason is the bizarre rules.

Tell me, why I was suspended for a week? I know one of the rules here is not to copy work from anywhere else, (even if that work is yours) -- but I was suspended for a week when I posted work here first, then I copied that work and posted it somewhere else.

So I cannot copy work from places I posted before, nor can I copy work from here where it was originally published. Or is it a matter of one of the admins mistaking seeing the work somewhere else, believing it was not originally posted here?

Your rules are too strange. I don't understand them one iota!

This is not a board for copy/pasted material.  It's for science Q&A and discussion.  You were given a temporary ban because you continually post content here that is identical to other fora on the web despite being repeatedly warned about this behavior.  It doesn't really matter if you post elsewhere first, and then here or post here first an then on other fora.

If you don't think you can follow that rule, then perhaps this forum isn't the best place for you to be posting.

Dear Mr Data, what reason do you have for making multiple postings of the same shizzle on different forums?  It would be a lot easier if you posted a link to the other forum with the information you wish to provide... then it would not matter if you wrote it or not as long as it was relevant to the question.

Of course posting stuff that you may not have written and taking the credit for it is very sneaky, not that I am saying you are doing that at all!

I have to say I did notice that you seemed to be an expert on several fields of science with a very varied style of writing, could this be because of the cut and paste?

Personally I have never read the rules of this forum and I don't even know where they are if I wanted too.  Also I don't see any kind of guide to the more technical aspects of making a post but I am sure I will stumble across the solutions at some point.

Getting banned for a week!  Lol, I wonder if I can get myself banned for a while so I don't have to keep checking when the next podcast will be as there has been no information about it for some weeks.

I could try and offend some of the naked scientists but they did that to themselves when they took their clothes off,   [:X]

Membership here certainly is optional.  Personally I haven't reviewed all of "the rules" either.

Most people seem to do just fine.

No Plagiarism.
Limit Quotes to applicable information (I hate it when people quote 100% of a prior person's lengthy discussion without noting what is important)
List Sources when practical, especially if it adds to the discussion.

I'm not sure about the duplication of identical posts on the web.  Many of us follow multiple BBS systems, but each seems to have somewhat different approaches to information, so while I may be tempted to cross-post an idea, I usually tailor it to the actual BBS system, as well as asking myself whether it is truly necessary.  Certainly there is a fight with people who SPAM multiple websites for their personal gain whether it is monetary, or perhaps just seeking help on homework without admitting it.

Actually, I virtually stopped posting on one website when about 50% of the questions appeared to be homework questions.  Some in the form...  "Which answer best describes the diagram above A.... B... C...", without providing the very vital diagram being referenced.

And, no personal attacks.  Sometimes that can be tough on controversial issues, but the problems can be kept in check with judicious quotes, sticking to issues, and citing legitimate sources.  The oddest one was when a user would call me out for not responding, or not conducting experiments for him.  If I only kept a stock of balloons in my house!!!  Sometimes if a question seems to be like a dog chasing its tail, then it is best to just let it die.

Usually people won't sit down and verify the information that another has posted unless it looks suspicious, for example posting equations as an example without seeming to understand the meaning of the equations, or posting a bunch of links that have obviously been abbreviated by another computer system.

By the way, just so the mods don't seem heavy-handed about the rules, we do give warnings before we take punitive action, and if you make a concerted effort to follow the rules after being warned, we don't hold grudges.  After all, there's a lot of rules and everyone can make mistakes.

But if you repeatedly ignore warnings from the mods about the rules, you'll run into trouble.

First of all, I'm no expert. There are many people out there who know even more about the sciences than I do.

Secondly, let us discuss this rule. There is no pleigerism involved in the actions I made in the past. In this specific case, the work belongs to me does it not? I am the author, why do I not hold ultimate rights over the work?

With that aside for a moment, please understand also that I was banned infairly. Surely there is no rule dictating that I cannot take information from here, work I have written myself and place it on another website? This is what happened in this case, and it was percieved the other way around, in that I had taken work from some other site and placed it here. I was told not to do that, because I did it before (work which was mine of course) - in this case, I never got any warning from any moderator. I was simply banned for this period of time.

I think it is quite unfair.

Dear Mr Data, what reason do you have for making multiple postings of the same shizzle on different forums?

I take great pleasure attending several science sites. Sometimes the subject at hand may be something I have written before, and so to save a great effort, it is easier to use work you have created rather than typing it out again.

My question is simple enough. Is there a rule which says I am not allowed to repost things I have commented here at this site?

1.
I moved this thread to Guestbook; it's the best place for explanations of the ethos and rules.

2.
There is a rule that asks you not to repost material that you have already posted elsewhere except when especially pertinent.  We try to enforce this rule for all posters - you will note quite a few threads locked for this reason.

3.
The forum acceptable usage policy is in this sub-forum.  If you are planning on staying then please have another read of it.

Mr Data, it would be a shame to loose your input to this forum and I hope that you decide to stay..  [;D]

Then tell me which one of these rules did I break? I never reposted material from other internet sites and then posted it here (in the case which involved the incident which led to my banning). I actually posted the content here first. I used that content elsewhere on a later date. Officially, I never broke any rules according to the rulebook.

Secondly, if I had actually done what you seem to be implying, I say what a load of codswollop! Sure, I'll obide by the rules, I intended to do that from the first get go. Most rules, as has been explained, are pretty manditory anyway. Why would a site enforce such a strange rule as the one exampled here? It's not as if the work was pleigerised, nor was this a case of bad posts. I usually think my posts are of a high standard most of the time, I did what I could to entertain the physics side of things, among other things. Surely this is a pertinent reason enough to let it be? Not to mention also that it is my work anyway, and I feel personally cheated out of my own rights to do with my work as damn well as I please :/

Maybe. If there can be any mutual understanding and fair process with the points I've raised. I think it is quite obvious that a moderator here has jumped the gun.

Mr Data,

Unfortunately the material that you also posted on the other website is no longer available, so we will probably never know where it was posted first. That does not even really matter, because posting the same stuff on multiple websites is not acceptable whether it's your original content or not.

It also appears that you have been banned from that other site for "sock-puppeting", presumably because you had been previously banned from that site and tried to sneak back in.

If your only objective it to whine, I will lock this thread and ban you again, and it won't be a temporary ban this time.

I hope that is clear enough.

Geezer.

There where speculations I was a sock puppet. I don't believe there was any evidence for it but a lot of handwaving. That is really not the point either!

My objective is not to whine as such. I want to understand why such a rule is made? And no, I have never came across a site which seems to take it so seriously. I can assure you with my word though, that I did post it here first.

It doesn't matter where you posted it first. If you paste the same stuff on multiple sites, it's a form of spam and it also looks a lot more like evangelising than participating.

TNS intentionally requires topics to be started as questions. If you simply start a new topic as a vehicle to expound a personal theory, it's not really a legitimate question. We tend to be quite liberal about that, but when we see the same stuff on multiple websites, we will come down on it like a ton of bricks.

My actions are considered spam, even if I actually participate in the discussion?

That is harsh.

Nothing harsh about it.

a) You have received multiple warnings about cross posting.

b) You started a thread in Physics that was a blatant attempt to evangelize your particular theory. That in itself is a violation of the AUP. Then, as it turns out, you have also posted the same theory on other web sites, which is a further violation, so you were banned, but only for a week.

I'm not wasting any more time dicussing this with you and I'm locking this thread.

If you bring this up in a TNS forum again, you will be banned again.
