I took these pics in the corner of 1 of the fields at my stable yard. There are 3 large holes which appear to lead deep underground and in close proximity are several deep gouges/shallow holes filled with excrement. It's definitely not fox or rabbit; I know what their stool looks like. The only candidate I can think of is badgers. Can anyone confirm please?

This is 1 of the holes leading underground. I put my foot there for size comparison - I'm a British size 8 (9-91/2 American.

This is 1 of the gouges with excrement. There are several of these in close proximity to what I assume are the entrance holes.

this is what badger droppings look like.
also the opening look a bit small. They clean out their nest every day so you will see that at one of the openings.

these are two I took myself of a typical badger set. it was about 20ft in to a wood with easy access to a field where there was lots of bedding material available at the time as it was Autumn

they look like little fox holes.. do you have poultry close by..Where do you live?

We do have a fox but I've never heard of foxes gouging a hole in the ground to have a dump in. And comparing Hadrian's poo photo with mine, I'd say they're pretty similar.
That hole is a good 15 inches across and there are others of similar size although there is 1 that is only about 10-12 inches across.
The holes I photographed are on 1 side of a raised boundary between fields. I didn't notice any discarded nest material; but there is a barbed wire fence running along the top & I don't have access to the neighbouring field so I don't know if there are more holes the other side with nesting material outside.

Do we have any scatoligists on the site , who could tell you!! Perhaps you could sed them a lovely care package to examine! LOL could be a badger, We have lots of foxs but this picture here in particular looks like our fox burroughs: I am not positive of coarse as I am not an expert, but foxes burrow as I recall. I believe that's where the military use of the term fox hole come from!! You should be able to find out if you are looking for fox dens or fox holes.. I think it is pretty common for them to also use a badgers or rabbits hole to enlarge and make bigger. Some of their holes can be rather complicated and may vary depending on the type of fox, say a red fox may vary in the way or places he or she picks to bourough.

You are probably right they mostly will not leave a calling card at the entrance to their own hole so in that , and as you said, AAnd I missed , my apologies, you have seen fox poop.. LOL and you said it was not fox poop! LOL..
Anyways Foxes definitely make complicated holes and dens some very elaborate..

It is not a herbivore or there would be more bulk and not the glistening look. I have a notion you may be on the right track. That is, unless you are harboring a carnivorous wombat!

Does the hole continue underground or just stop. because foxes and badgers alike have pretty elobout tunnels underground..Epecially when making a den for off spring!
