The Hubble Ultra Deep Field

I think this represents what equates to a portion of the sky the size of a pinhead !!!

Each speck in this picture is a galaxy....each galaxy has about 100-300 BILLION Stars !!..and there's something like 100-300 BILLION Galaxies out there !!

Do you get it ?...can you even imagine such a thing ?...can you even fathom it ?

Space is ......awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhsome........... makes one feel so tiny...

There's this guy, S.Geiger I guess, who makes art out of math. Have a look at his gallery website.
He's quite keen to share his work all around so no problem if you use some pics as wallpaper.
SUPER STUFF!

Galaxy evolution in cyber universe matches astronomical observations in fine detail

* 060606.galaxy3.jpg (126.21 kB . 459x459 - viewed 54324 times)

This image from a supercomputer simulation of the evolution of the universe shows a cubic volume of outer space measuring approximately 280 million light years across. The image portrays the universe 13.4 billion years (the present) after the big bang.

The bright dots correspond with high concentrations of dark matter, which are associated with sites of galaxy formation. The simulation shows how dark matter, an invisible material of unknown composition, herded luminous matter in the universe from its initial smooth state into the cosmic web of galaxies and galaxy clusters that populate the universe. The University of Chicago’s Andrey Kravtsov, Charlie Conroy and Risa Weschlser will describe these findings in a paper published in the June 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

Symphony of colours in the Tarantula

The Tarantula is situated 170,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the Southern sky and is clearly visible to the naked eye as a large milky patch. Astronomers believe that this smallish irregular galaxy is currently going through a violent period in its life. It is orbiting around the Milky Way and has had several close encounters with it. It is believed that the interaction with the Milky Way has caused an episode of energetic star formation – part of which is visible as the Tarantula Nebula.

It seems that a Hubble servicing trip is definitely under way, liftoff is scheduled for 06/12/07.
I am worried about the Hubble replacement to be located 1.5 million miles away.
servicing will not be possible and one minor hitch can ruin the whole project.

Correction

06.07.07 - NASA managers officially are targeting Sept. 10, 2008, for the launch of the fifth and final space shuttle servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.

actually the estimated number of galaxies is far greater then 100-300 billion galaxies. There are also galaxies with far less then 100 billion and others with more then 300 billion stars. In the visible universe alone which is just an extremely small portion of the universe there are 350 trillion large galaxies and 7 trillion dwarf galaxies. 10 million super clusters and 25 billion galaxy groups and 3*10^22 or 30 sextillion stars.

These are great pics and quite amazing. Looking at the other pics on the site are also amazing. The F/A-18 in the pic in the first link is doing about 700mph under the golden gate bridge at an altitude of about 20 feet and surrounded by numerous small pleasure craft on the water. It is in a transonic state (just below supersonic). I am amazed this was permitted on safety grounds but the pictures are great and I have no reason to doubt the authenticity. It makes me want to go to the next display in SF.

P.S. A note on the site says the F/A-18 did not fly under the bridge - it just looks like it did. It points at a video which shows the flypast too.

Aircraft flying under bridges has a long history, an aircraft has been recorded flying under London tower bridge.
When I was in Kiel I was told about an allied aircraft that attempted to fly under the bridge at the entrance to the Kiel canal and did not make it!

The Spitzer image was taken over a period of 24 hours and is a three-colour composite showing infrared observations from two Spitzer instruments. Blue represents 3.6-micron light and are older stars in the star-forming cloud as well as unrelated stars behind and in front of the cloud, and green shows light of 8 microns, highlighting dense clouds, both captured by Spitzer's infrared array camera. Red is 24-micron light detected by Spitzer's multiband imaging photometer and shows heated dust that pervades the region's cavities. White knotty areas are where the youngest stars are forming. Title: Re: The truth is out there, in pictures.

Meteorites are classified into three basic categories: irons, stones, and stony irons.
Iron meteorites, or “irons”, are actually a combination of iron, nickel, and cobalt. Iron is the predominant metal, with 5% up to 50% nickel, and a trace of cobalt.
Stone meteorites, also called “stony meteorites” or stones, are mostly believed to be material from the crust and mantle of asteroids. A few stony meteorites are thought to be from comets. Stone meteorites contain approximately 75% to 90% silicate materials, such as olivine and pyroxene.
Stony–iron meteorites, or stony–irons, are mixtures of silicates and iron–nickel in roughly equal proportions(stony-irons are rare).

What is the definition of a 'meteorite'? How big or small do these things have to be until they are called a meteorite?
Title: Re: The truth is out there, in pictures.
Post by: CosmicAudioChic on 28/01/2009 07:11:10
A meteorite is a meteor that survives the intense heat of atmospheric friction and reaches the earth's surface. So, as long as it reaches the surface, size does not matter  [:D]

Title: Re: The truth is out there, in pictures.
Post by: CosmicAudioChic on 28/01/2009 08:28:19
Yes, from our Solar System. The vast majority of meteorites are fragments of shattered asteroids.A small number of meteorites are pieces of rock from the surfaces of other planets.Meteorites might also come from comets.

How do asteroids/comets form?
Title: Re: The truth is out there, in pictures.
Post by: CosmicAudioChic on 29/01/2009 05:52:23
Comets, asteroids, and meteors are often grouped together since they are all basically the same thing: small pieces of rock and/or ice that aren't part of a major planet.
Asteroids are made of rocky and/or iron-nickel material and most are found in an orbit between Mars and Jupiter. Comets come from two places in the Solar System: the Oort Cloud and the Kuiper Belt.

What amazes me is that folks can actually look at a meteorite and identify which planet it came from, or whether it is just space debris.

Barnard's Loop around the Horsehead Nebula

Credit & Copyright: Drew Sullivan (Ancient Starlight)

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Bigger version here (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0902/barnardsloop_sullivan_big.jpg)

Why is the Horsehead Nebula surrounded by a bubble? Although hard to make out, the famous Horsehead Nebula is the slight dark indentation in the bright streak just to the left of the image center. Glowing like an emission nebula, the origin of the bubble, known as Barnard's Loop, is currently unknown. Progenitor hypotheses include the winds from bright Orion stars and the supernovas of stars long gone. Barnard's Loop is too faint to be identified with the unaided eye. The nebula was discovered only in 1895 by E. E. Barnard on long duration film exposures. The above image was taken in a single specific color emitted by hydrogen to bring out detail. To the left of the Horsehead Nebula, visible as a small dark indentation, is the photogenic Flame Nebula.

I know it was a planet because I learned and knows that 2009 is the planetary alignment. This year happen to me not like last year no very light star appear every night. I strongly believed it was a planet not an ordinary star or galaxy.. same photos posted here Mars light photo.

I think this represents what equates to a portion of the sky the size of a pinhead !!!

Wow!! awesome post dude!!! it takes ones breath away!!!
it makes one feel tiny and humble... it seems we are not even a tiny speck of  dust!!!!

Each speck in this picture is a galaxy....each galaxy has about 100-300 BILLION Stars !!..and there's something like 100-300 BILLION Galaxies out there !!

Do you get it ?...can you even imagine such a thing ?...can you even fathom it ?

The Big Bang theory is an effort to explain what happened at the very beginning of our universe. Discoveries in astronomy and physics have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that our universe did in fact have a beginning. Prior to that moment there was nothing; during and after that moment there was something: our universe. The big bang theory is an effort to explain what happened during and after that moment.

According to the standard theory, our universe sprang into existence as "singularity" around 13.7 billion years ago. What is a "singularity" and where does it come from? Well, to be honest, we don't know for sure. Singularities are zones which defy our current understanding of physics. They are thought to exist at the core of "black holes." Black holes are areas of intense gravitational pressure. The pressure is thought to be so intense that finite matter is actually squished into infinite density (a mathematical concept which truly boggles the mind). These zones of infinite density are called "singularities." Our universe is thought to have begun as an infinitesimally small, infinitely hot, infinitely dense, something - a singularity. Where did it come from? We don't know. Why did it appear? We don't know.

This has to be my all time favourite photo from Hubble. The so-called Pillars Of Creation where stars are being formed.

(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffixitordeal.files.wordpress.com%2F2008%2F07%2Fpillars20of20creation.jpg&hash=bd938f9a2a520175925a93bd63979f06)

This is the picture that had such a huge effect on me I became an astronomer! I think I was about 10-12 years old at the time and just imagining the fact that each of the little bits poking out were whole solar systems forming blew my mind!

BIG PICCY HERE (Makes a great desktop piccy) (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0903/tarantula2_hst_big.jpg)

In the heart of monstrous Tarantula Nebula lies huge bubbles of energetic gas, long filaments of dark dust, and unusually massive stars. In the center of this heart, is a knot of stars so dense that it was once thought to be a single star. This star cluster, labeled as R136 or NGC 2070, is visible just above the center of the above image and home to a great number of hot young stars. The energetic light from these stars continually ionizes nebula gas, while their energetic particle wind blows bubbles and defines intricate filaments. The above representative-color picture of this great LMC nebula details its tumultuous center. The Tarantula Nebula, also known as the 30 Doradus nebula, is one of the largest star-formation regions known, and has been creating unusually strong episodes of star formation every few million years.

How do they determine what planet a meteor came from, if that's the case?

Also, who would one contact if they had a meteor specimen they'd like to have examined/analyzed?

Did you know that there is an excellent yet powerful type of software available to explore the Universe in all its glory and formation. One of the first extraordinary insights into the Universe, available on the computer software markert, "Uniview" provides the user to travel to different planets - stars, comets, galaxies, moons and planets pin-pointed to the exact degree!

In our ever modernising world of technology, such software is uniquely different to offer students across the world interested in roaming space and appreciating the size, volume and richness of matter which is out there.

Question ~ if we look back in time at ancient cosmological artifacts, then why has no one ever bothered to construct a model of what the universe looks like now? Precisely, are we inherenly swiming in a space time which will always refuse to allow us to "see" distance, or "move" through what we monkey-like call distance, space, and time? I personally think we are out of our depth, and need to interrogate the underpinnings of our mathematical system. It is sorta primitive, based as it is on assumed agreed one banana two banana intergers.

I think it was Hubble who came up with the big bang theory. He showed that objects were traveling way from the Earth. The truth is everything is based on what we call reproduction. As far as we are aware we are the only planet to contain life. For some reason only man posseses the remarkable feat of advanced intelligence. All other life forms on Earth are limited to the amount of intelligence they have. All life on Earth as the natural function of reproducing itself. Where are your great, great, great, great, great grand children. They do not exist yet. So where are they? But we all know one day in the future they will be here. You can say the same for plants and animals. Here is the most remarkable thing of all. Stars, Planets, galaxies all reproduce themselves as well. Non of these things are alive. If Hubble could have seen beyond, what this amazing telescope named after him could see. This Big Bang theory has happened countless times. Our brains cannot concieve or understand the size of the universe just because there are dark patches in the night sky, we tend to think there is nothing there. but the truth is there is, and there are countless Big Bangs. We are in no position to measure how big the universe is. We are in the same position as Christopher Columbus was when he travelled across the Atlantic. We have no idea of whats out there, how big it is and how far away is it.Gary

Remember the galaxy quote is just what we can see,  we are looking at photon's that are so old,  there is no guarantee that there isn't much much much much more out there than those staggering figures we just can't see yet or maybe never will be able to.

I suspect there will be and the new hubble replacement they'll have to recalculate the age of the universe and all of this again.

The truth is out there, in pictures. And here are some
to prove just that!

(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1002.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf144%2Fgenekerls%2FEinstein-Earth-Moon.gif&hash=a65d61ba9dd94e9bb5b5c7ac2159ce95)

I am able to show that Einstein’s math is fine for orbital systems of planets and their moons to solar systems and on to galaxies, and also on to the expanding of the universe.

(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1002.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf144%2Fgenekerls%2F0131_xray_420.jpg&hash=3b3d911bebc1c2d423ed43af4869f676)

This is NASA’s way of showing that Einstein was right.
This Chandra image shows important new details in the powerful jet shooting from the quasar 3C273, providing an X-ray view into the area between 3C273's core and the beginning of the jet.High-powered jets driven from quasars, often at velocities very close to the speed of light, have long been perplexing for scientists. Instead of seeing a smooth stream of material driven from the core of the quasar, most optical, radio, and earlier X-ray observations have revealed inconsistent, "lumpy" clouds of gas*1. The recent Chandra data show a continuous X-ray flow in 3C273 from the core to the jet, which may reveal insight on the physical processes that power these jets. Scientists would like to learn why matter is violently ejected from the quasar's core, then appears to suddenly slow down.*2

*1 The cooling down of three planets.
*2 The locking into an orbit of the three planets. The making of a
     new solar system.

In my hypothesis, I fully agree with Einstein that there has to be an equal an opposite force in action here. And I see this in the action of the gravitational fields of each heavenly bodies acting as the opposite force at a given wavelength / and or a given density level, even through they are pulling on each other’s mass’s.

peaking of nature photography, have you seen the image of the new "missing link" fossil now on view at the American Museum of Natural History in New York? This fossil, which is 47 million years old, is said by scientists to the earliest human ancestor--a link between the animals that became homo sapien and other mammals. It's a controversial theory, but very exciting, and the announcement is being pumped up with considerable marketing muscle. The fossil is called Ida ("eeda"), and when you gaze at the images of it, you understand the primordial fear evoked by the creature in the Alien films.--David Schonauer

This one, in long IR, highlights the dust and also shows that M31 is a bit warped, probably due to an ancient collision with, and the subsequent absorbsion of a smaller galaxy.

guess i could have given more information. i only have an Orion 4.5 inch reflector with no motor or electronics. however i crafted a wooden mount to hold a digital camera to the eyepiece. the eyepiece was standard and came with the telescope but i don't remember (maybe 13mm or 15mm) but with a 4 sec exposure and a little patients, you can get alot done.  also i edited the individual photos into one aligned photo with GIMP2

does the picture above depict 2 stars or 2 galaxies consuming each-other?
looks like 2 galaxies to me. Also take a look a this supernova, It's my favorite space picture.

If you stick with this, you can collect the whole thing.

I plan to link the webcam up for the lunar eclipse, weather permitting.

There is something of an ambiguity whether someone who dispenses medication should be called a "Pharmicist" or a "Chemist"(at least in Australia).

This one is claiming to be both! (and he knows about hair shampoo and/or mascara too...)
Can you identify the chemicals displayed?

Could be Retinol (Vitamin A) on the right ...

They appear to be stylised representations of fluoxetine, propofol and retinol.

The article states that the estimated mass of this halo is 1/2 the total mass of the stars in Andromeda.  To account for the galaxy rotation curves, it would need to be a few times the total mass of the stars.

When it comes to effecting the orbital speed of a star in a galaxy it is only the mass that is closer to the center of the galaxy than the star that counts (imagine the star as being on the surface of a bubble. it is the mass inside that bubble that determines its orbital speed.)   For the gas halo to provide the required mass, it would have to be many times the density it is measured to have.  Also, as the article points out, this gas plays a role in star formation for the galaxy.  If it was many times denser, it would have had a profound effect on this.

Uh, no.  If the universe is 14 billion years old, there is no reason to believe that advanced life could form and find us by now.   I think there is likely life out there, based on the mathematics ,  but finding us is almost impossible.

The galaxy is a big and mysterious place. Astronomers are consistently finding new planets.  We had a very heated forum discussion if unidentified planets and if life truly exists on other planets. Find out more! My opinion we are not alone! :D :D :D :D

Space is a very captivating thing. I wish that I could capture space myself someday. Every picture makes you wonder what lies beneath all these amazing and bewitching sceneries. This picture is from NASA's 'with a tapestry of blazing star birth, Hubble commemorates 30 years in space'. NASA has unveiled a magnificent new snapshot of a firestorm of star birth in a nearby galaxy to commemorate the Hubble Space Telescope's 30 years of revealing the beauty and mystery of space. The enormous red nebula (NGC 2014) and its smaller blue companion (NGC 2020) are part of a massive star-forming area in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way 163,000 light-years distant in this Hubble image. Due to its resemblance with the undersea world, the image is also nicknamed Cosmic Reef. Hubble is transforming contemporary astronomy, not just for scientists but also for the general public, by bringing them on a breathtaking voyage of exploration and discovery. Hubble's never-ending, magnificent cosmic images serve as a visual summary of Hubble's greatest scientific accomplishments. Hubble made astronomy relevant, entertaining, and accessible to people of all ages, unlike any other space telescope before it. The iconic vision of the space telescope has altered our understanding of the cosmos and our location in time and space.
