Title: multiple universes

I have heard some where about the multiple universe theory and it fascinated me no end. What are your comments reflections on it? [8)]

They are postulated as an explanation as to why everything in the universe makes it so friendly to us.
It is suggested that there are a vast number of universi of varying characteristics and we just happen to exist in the one that suits us

The answer lies in the values of fundamentals. Why do the 4 known forces (electromagnetism, weak, strong & gravity) have the values they do? Why do particles have their precise masses? If any of these values were even slightly different then we could not exist. We exist in this universe because we could only exist in a universe where the fundamental values are precisely what they are. For instance, if gravity was stronger then the universe would not have expanded. It would have very quickly collapsed in on itself.

This article explains the Anthropic Principle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropic_principle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropic_principle) & here's 1 on multiple universes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_universes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_universes).

There is no proof for or against multiple universes and quite possibly never will be. Personally, I believe in them. It just seems to me to stretch incredulity that this is the only universe in the same way that I can't believe Earth is the only planet that supports life.

I am not a scientist but a layman (woman in this case)who is intrigued by basic questions such as where does the universe end...if it ends at all.. what is the begining of time....and so on..its the bigger picture that intrigues me rather than the nitty gritties! There is a speculation that there are multiple copies/replicas/clones of us that exsist in parallel universes. Its said that Budha found the answers to the mysteries..that have evaided the scientists...through deep meditation.

There may be a universe where Gautama Buddha is a skinny, hyperactive, capitalist war-mongerer!   [:P]

But, seriously... I don't hold with the Doppleganger theory of multiple universes. Although, having said that, were another universe to develop in exactly the same way as ours due to immutable universal laws, would everything be identical including the people?  [???]

Its is believed by some that there are several parallel universes available at each moment, and according to the choices that we make, we move into one of them. so the reality gets moulded or shaped as we move based on our choices.

Yes, I've come across theories such as those. They began as thought experiments to answer some of the mysteries of quantum mechanics & have become popular among writers of Sci-Fi.

Personally, I'm not convinced.

P.S. Have you seen the message I sent you? The link to your messages is in the top, right-hand corner of the screen.

The concept of multiverses can at most be hypothetical, since the moment we are able to interreact with the other universe, it becomes a part of our universe.

I can understand how some concepts of quantum physics might be attracted to the notion of multiverses - as you have the notion in quantum physics a state exists only when you observe it, and until that time all possible states are superimposed and exist simultaneously (as hypothesised by Einstein's Schrödinger's cat thought experiment - where the cat is at once alive and dead until you view it, and then the universe much choose between a dead and a living cat).

Einstein did not like the idea, and neither do I, but the acceptence of most of the rest of quantum physics has been so successful that it is difficult at present to think of another way of explaining it.

I think the multiple universe is a bunch of bull****.

We live in this universe and we know what we know and that's it. Why haven't we traveled in time, or get sucked into a vacuum for 15 years of darkness and end up in another time, another galaxy and then merge back through a wormhole. This universe is one....there is no other and if there were others, they may have existed before this one.

godhastoexist,

The Naked Scientis discussion is a public forum which does not allow the use of profanity. I know that the word you originally used is rather innocuous to most people but we do have policies that must be enforced.

Please refrain from using profanity in the future. It just isn't done like that here.

There is a difference between the multiple parallel universes of some of the more esoteric ideas in quantum mechanics and what is often called the Multiverse  tis involves multiple seperated universes in space time.  To a cerain extent the inside of a black hole is a seperate universe that material can enter but not come out (in its original form).  It is considered by that our universe could exist as a black hole (of a relativley modest size) inside another universe.  That is because black holes are a bit like the tardis and in some ways bigger on the inside than outside.

I think that multiple universes do exist because that is one of the few ways to explain tim travel paradoxes for example what if you travel back in time and kill your grandmother before your mother was born. If your mother wasnt born then you werent born which means you couldnt have existed to go back in time in the first place. An answer to that is the multiple universe theory. when u kill your grandma, you create another reality or branch or universe in which u werent born. If multiple universes dont exist then time travel doesnt. Nowadays, with more info and technology, it is becoming increasingle possible that time travel will be possible in the future considering the rate at which technology is growing

I think that black holes are nothing but collapsed stars. what might be possible, is a wormhole. according to a theory that spacetime is curved or "S" like, wormholes are tubes that connect for ex the upper branch to the center,a "shortcut". if you gothrough it, you go to a different time in the future and a different place.

I am no scientist, but science fascinates me. Reading some of the comments on Multi-verses has prompted me to make a response. The best and a very fascinating theory (and it is very logical and well explained) was in a set of horror novels, "The Necroscope" which is a series of books by a writer named Brian Lumley. He has done his research well and his writings are full of scientific data, both factual and theoretical. A modern day Asimov with a few vampires thrown in for good measure.

PS. I say I am no scientist "YET" but hopefully will be one day as I am now in my 2nd year at the OU, studying Earth sciences, Natural Sciences and Geology. I passed various early courses in Planetary Studies, History of Earth and Fossils. So one day I might be able to post more educated views and reviews

"we know what we know and that's it"?  Are you trying to say that we're never going to learn anything that we don't know?  That's what it sounds like, but clearly that's preposterous.

"Why haven't we traveled in time, ..."?  Well, why haven't we cured cancer?  100 years ago, you could have said, "Why haven't we traveled to the moon?" or "Why haven't we cured smallpox?" or "Why haven't we been able to build a vehicle that can fly?".  Just because we can't yet travel in time is no reason to say that we won't be able to do it eventually.

Have you ever read Bandler or Grinder?
As each of us change our thought processes that change occurs at both a physical and quantum level and therefore the universe changes constantly but the greatest changes occur on a singular and personal level.

what if there where many universes, but not at all like ours, different dimensions, maybe sharing some dimensions, like time. maybe all the universes are overlapping eachother in some way. makes NO sense does it?

just a thought

On the contrary, it makes a lot of sense. We could be living on a 3+1 dimensional brane (3 spatial, 1 temporal) in a multi-dimensional universe. The bulk of the universe could have any number of dimensions so long as there are more than the number of dimensions on our brane.

If that is the case, then there may well be more than 1 3+1 dimensional universe like ours, but separated by the multi-dimensional bulk. These 3+1D branes AND the bulk could all "share" the same temporal dimension.
