Are there health benefits to drinking tea?
« on: 29/08/2005 17:45:24 »
I heard tea is supposed to be healthy, but im wondering how its healthy exactly. Refering to normal store bought tea (like Lipton for example) with no sugar or any weird flavoring added, served iced, what if any are the health benefits? Thanks in advance for your responses

from newbielink:http://www.cookscorner.net/Tea/Antioxidants.html [nonactive]

Antioxidants In Tea

A growing body of research indicates that the tannins in tea are naturally-occurring flavonoids which have strong antioxidant properties. Drinking tea is a natural and pleasant way to increase dietary intake of antioxidants. There is mounting evidence that suggests that antioxidant-rich foods may play a role in reducing the risk of certain cancers, heart disease and stroke.

Researchers indicated that black and green tea have comparable health benefits and that adding milk to tea, does not inhibit the body's ability to benefit from the antioxidants in brewed tea.

About three times as many antioxidant polyphenois is found in white tea then green tea. White tea is simply dried in natural sunlight, "this preserves more of its antioxidant properties"
Drinking white tea besides being more beneficial is that the pale amber liquid is a lot more palatable than green tea and doesn't have the same cabbagy smell.

Recent research exploring the potential health attributes of tea is leading many scientists to agree that tea, both black and green, may contribute positively to a healthy lifestyle. "Fruits, vegetables, and tea all contain important antioxidants. Research suggests these phytonutrients may contribute substantially to the promotion of health and the prevention of chronic disease. For example, recent research studies reveal the antioxidants in tea may inhibit the growth of cancer cells and support cardiovascular health," stated Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., F.A.C.N, Chief of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

I recently heard on the news that coffee has this benefit as well, but sometimes I think they're just telling us what we want to hear  ;)

I drink lots of coffee, but recently switched to tea midday, as I have a friend who is quite the tea drinker and believes that it's healthier.  The two I've tried are Twinings English Breakfast and Tetley British Blend, and I like the taste of the Twinings better.  I'm drinking it for the caffeine content, as a coffee substitute, and have previously used herb teas mostly for medicinal purposes.

I'm a tea addict. I could never get through an entire day without a cup of freshly-brewed loose green tea. The smell alone is enough to make my mouth water and the delicious sensation of fresh hot tea sliding down my throat is something that I always take time to relish during my tea break. Green tea has tons of health benefits and is a great source of antioxidants. Some of the best green tea can be found at SPAMMYteas.com. Cheers!

Oh, and you are banned. Cheers! (MOD)

Tea like most things, if you have too much it is not good.
Green tea may reduce risk of some cancers, black tea may help fight diabetes amoung many other So many benefits but now they think too much can increase the risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Depending on other herbs or medications you take and how they react to tea will have some type of outcome also.

Does it? Is there a ref or citation to this or is it folk history?

This is an inaccurate oversimplification if you are overweight, increased appetite is not a benefit!

Where is the reasoning for this statement? A 'tonic for the health' is one of those meaningless rhetoric statements when someone thinks its good for you but doesn't actually have any evidence for it.

1. Tea can help to loss your weighted body.
Can it? How? Does it act as an appetite suppressant?
Quote
2. It gives you a freshness.
Can you explain what Freshness means to you?
Quote
3. It can fresh your mind.
What does this mean? Is this true or just folk history? How can it be quantified?
Quote
4. It is helpful in many heart related diseases.
Any specific evidence or examples?
Quote
5. It has not any side effects.
what you elude to above may all be considered as side effects.
Now I love a good cuppa tea but can we steer clear of these wooly pseudo-science claims and focus on some facts please?
It is generally accecpted that green tea has antioxidant flavinoid content and anti-oxidants are good for free radical mopping up. Free radicals can be part of natural human metabolism as well as a precursor to cell damage if in localised excess. Just because tea contains flavinoids does not mean it has capability of counteracting cancer. We must steer away from these false and misleading inferences. Unless it can be shown that the tea flavinoids actually migrate to an area within a cell or organ to act as a free radical scavenger and prevent damage, this claim is worthless.

How is kambucha tea different that regular tea?  And how did someone come up with the original "mushroom" used for making kambucha?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombucha tells you it is a fermented preparation using yeast and bacteria culture, whereas normal tea of course is an infusion of leaves in hot water.

Several studies suggest that noni juice can reduce inflammation, Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammation of the joints, so anything that can soothe inflammation will probably ease the pain, One study indicates that something in noni juice may affect the immune system....

Hi all,
Yes i believe that tea has its benefits and negatives.
Most notably the anti oxidant content of tea is great as these anti oxidants fight harmful free radicals within the body to keep our entire systems healthy.
However, on the negative side, tea does have caffeine in it. Some people aren't aware of this. Do some of your own research into caffeine as it's not as healthy as some people think it is.

So although tea has beneficial anti oxidants, it also has caffeine and there are many other sources of food which have much much higher levels of anti oxidants.

Good luck with your research.  [8D]

Green tea is an efficient anticancer agent.

In combination with anticancer compounds, green tea can exert a synergistic effect on tumorigenesis inhibition.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1614997

In addition, catechins in green tea may inhibit the replication of the influenza virus.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16137775

Also, flavonoids (polyphenols) in green tea may have a antidepressant effect and may be used to treat depression and obesity.

Finally, green tea may have neuroprotective properties through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on dopaminergic neurons. Thus, green tea may be used for treatment and prevention of Parkinson disease by lowering inflammation and oxidative stress.

Hey,

I recently found out about medicinal teas. What do you think about them?

Are there any tea brands you'd recommend?

Thanks!
