Hi, ES, I had a brief look at that article you posted. I was horrified to find ethylene glycol was found in some samples of fluid. Glycerol and propylene glycol are relatively safe but ethylene glycol is definitely not suitable for use in a product that is consumed. When I say glycerol and propylene glycol are relatively safe what I mean is that ingestion of either is considered quite safe but vaporising either may not be: both of these substances are quite capable of producing toxins if sufficiently heated. I too picked up the noxious habit of smoking for a short while in my 20's-30's, long since dropped. I always missed my nicotine and my solution is nicotine gum.

You really need to understand some basic chemistry first. I have no idea what is meant by "halogenation causes anaesthesia". Inorganic fluoride is extremely stable and non-reactive: to introduce fluorine into a molecule an activated reagent is needed such as a fluoro-sulphur compound, fluoride will not do it. Enol tautomers occur in ketones with an alpha hydrogen: acetone will exhibit keto enol tautomerism while benzophenone will not. There is no such thing as an enol tautomer of fluoride. Where did you get the idea that 1, 3 dichloropropanol would be an anaesthetic?, I very much doubt it.

Possibly correct but not a great way to express it. The standard is red shift or blue shift and the use of convoluted language can lead to confusion, of which we seem to have plenty!!

A value of, or approaching, infinite density can arise in two ways: (1) infinite mass in a finite volume or (2) finite mass in a zero volume. It was (2) that several posters were alluding to and the "infinite mass" in the singularity is an unfortunate misunderstanding by the OP.

I have looked up the derivation of the wave equation via the Laplacian of the E or H field in phasor form and it is completely symmetric: a time variation in either produces an em wave.

I also am fairly sure a rotating magnet would radiate em. It would have to rotate at quite a high speed to generate easily detectable radiation. I have been trying for several hours to mentally model the maths involved but I have failed so far. We normally look at charge acceleration to produce em as it is the most convenient method but one has to remember that the magnetic field is simply the electric field as seen from a different frame of reference.

Indeed ES, electromagnetic fields do have momentum. I have glanced over the relevant maths for a rigorous derivation and it is quite complex- don't ask me to show this, it is beyond my abilities. This is not Hamdani's thread, he resurrected an old thread from "timey" and then we hijacked it!

A magnetron is a cheap and powerful source of microwaves where frequency accuracy and stability are not of great concern. One could do the same with an oscillator+amplifier at much greater cost and complexity. A microwave oven operates ~3ghz. Cellphones are devices that use microwave frequencies, my old phone uses 0.9-1.8ghz and I think current(4g and 5g) models use much higher frequencies. My satellite gogglebox signal arrives from the satellite at ~10ghz. So electronic generation at these high frequencies is commonplace.

Okay then, cooking lessons are finished, anyone interested in getting this thread back on track? I for one would disagree with ES as further unification of our disparate theories would be of great benefit in understanding our universe. Just look at the benefits that flowed from Maxwell's unification of magnetic and electric phenomena into electromagnetics. Obviously the outstanding problem is the incompatibility of GR and quantum. Whether a T O E can be arrived at I don't know but efforts in that direction could easily provide new insights and benefits.

Indeed, one can go to many tens of gigahertz and the same phenomena occur as at 1mhz, the chief difference is the reduction in length of the radiator and the use of waveguides rather than coax cable.

A fast reply=boredom. Despite my advanced age I have no bodily complaints except one-sensitivity to cold. It is way too cold in my workshop/lab/mancave to do anything at all. Similarly in the garden. In my twenties I did karate for a few years, with little to show for all my input. I did however quickly discover that I could kick with far greater strength and accuracy using my left hoof than I could with my right one. And I am right handed.

I have expressed my opinion previously about the hazards of messing about with powerful high voltage transformers. The domestic microwave oven transformer is widely used by hobbyists and garage tinkerers and the hazards involved are horrendous, someone is going to die.
