I have IExplorer 8, if that helps you any. This "Not Responding" happens a lot, often during searches, but also here on Naked Science Forum. It'll hang up, then, if I click on the webpage, specifically on the title bar or one of the tabs, the title bar shows "(Not Responding)". Sometimes it clears after several seconds, other times apparently not. Then I need to close the session and start again.
Also, my McAfee SiteAdvisor icon often goes gray and does not do its job.
So, how do I fix my IExplorer? Are the two problems related?

Is there caching set up? I dont use IE very much, so thats is a best guess I am afraid. Do you have the same effect using other browsers?
Google seach shows me McAfee site icon goes grey if it has not tested/checked the site you are on.

I suspect that the problem is not within IE but is actually either due to the site itself not responding, or network congestion.
When you say it often occurs during searches, what exactly do you mean? Are you not able to connect to the search site e.g. Google, or does it just take too long before it comes back with the search results?
I frequently find that the NS forum takes more than just a few seconds to respond, especially when I preview or actually make a posting and get the impression that it's probably due to heavy utilisation on the NS server at the time.

I've had a similar problem, nothing wrong with IE or McAfee, another bit of software was utilizing the resources on my computer and preventing IE, McAfee and many other programmes from working by tying up resources,
In my case it was a video driver which was causing my apps to hang/crash, (Vista [>:(]).
On Vista to see any problems click on the windows icon (bottom left),
then put "problem reports and solutions" in the search box (bottom left)
then select that option from the menu, then select "view problem history".
Or for mind-bogglingly detailed error reports put "event viewer" in the search box and select that option from the menu.

Install Firefox would be the easiest solution

It's more likely congestion / failed link at your own end of the network - are you using wireless? Via a repeater? The same thing happens to me occasionally although not since I stopped using a Belkin range extender and set up my own using a Linksys router running DD-wrt.

I have noticed that IE 7 and 8 have this weird timing issue, which stalls the application if you open a tab at exactly the right (or wrong?) time.
It seems that the spawned thread that services the new tab has some sort of event manager listening for it in the main thread that never gets a connection. In english that means that it will wait forever and you will not be able to use it unless you end it from the task manager.
In my view IE8 is not suitable for mass use, its broken, full stop.
currently there is no way to fix this without hacking it a bit, so my suggestion would be to download the superb namoroko browser here : http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.6a1/releasenotes/#download
It is still in alpha stage but I have been using it for weeks without any problem.

It sounds more like a bad connection to the web. Test your link speed. I use speakeasy. Google "speakeasy" and you'll see a speed test.

Firefox, but maybe not the latest versions. They seem to overdo them somewhat. There comes a limit to all software when they become to clever for their own good and lately Firefox have started to irritate me :) What's really good with firefox is the 'addons' take some time to look them through. You will save time and problems later by choosing the ones that suits you.. It reminds me of the good old days when basic and Dos were there to save your day :)

When my IE8 freezes and hangs all I do is click to close it, then most of the time you get that message saying program not responding, end now or cancel. Click end now. Then open up the task manager, ctrl+alt+del and then click the processes tab, find dumprep.exe and end that process. IE8 will then close. Open up IE8 again and it works fine.
It's better than waiting for like 15 minutes to see if IE8 does anything productive while not responding.
P.S I'm running Windows XP OS so that's what the instructions are for, but they are pretty self explanatory for other Windows OS.

Check you don't have some objectionable "add-on" running in IE. If so, disable it.

There is a version of IE without add-ons in "Accessories" - "System Tools" ...

Running it is a quick way of seeing if add-ons are causing problems.

Try firefox, you wont go back.
IE 8 is really bad, and its such a shame you have to go through that process.
IE8, to me, was not tested properly, and it is plain to see its full of bugs, and the worst is that it seems to crash so easily because of its fragility. Microsoft really can do better than that, and with lots of other browsers on the horizon it's gonna be game over soon for IE.

It is very easy to make a comment like that in hindsight. If you were smart enough to anticipate the monopoly, why didn't you exploit it yourself?
Did you see the opportunity but you decided not to exploit it for altruistic reasons?

Well, considering i was about 5 when microsoft started, i dont see any way i could have been able to do it, unless I mistakenly built a time machine from my lego and went forward to now when you asked me this question, and then went back in time to start building a browser with marbles.

Ah! I can see how that might have made things a bit difficult. I actually could have done something about it, although I didn't have the financial advantage that Gates started with, but I never did. [:(]

You see, one of the major problems holding back real computing power of hand held devices is ... the screen size, yip its too small for lots of windows like a PC or notebook....
but when hologram technology is taken to hand held devices then it will herald a new era of personal computing, well thats my opinion at least...
And also quantum computers will be the next big thing too...
