When building parts of aircraft carriers in differerent temperatures, how do they acount for thermal expansion?
« on: 31/10/2016 14:23:01 »
Mike Greenland  asked the Naked Scientists:
Thinking of the building of the new aircraft carriers....they have been built in different locations So a large section built in Portsmouth at say 20 degree.  And a large section built in Scotland at 15deg. These are then joined. Given the very large size thermal expansion must be a factor. How do they measure this at different temperatures to ensure they fit?
Mike Greenland

Mutiply the linear dimensions by the expansion coefficient, or rely on the elasticity of the components.
