Title: Why am I waking up in the night?
Post by: katieHaylor on 09/05/2018 14:27:46
Kim asks:

Why very often as I've just drifted off to sleep do I awake feeling like something has bumped my bed or scratched lightly on the carpet in my room?
I feel there must be a scientific explanation for this as opposed to some energy force disturbing me.

What do you think?

I assume you have no pets. So next step is it based in reality or not. Could there be a mouse in the house? Maybe try an ultrasound critter repellent and report back.

Sometimes our brains do loopy things as we are drifting off to sleep.
If you are particularly anxious, this may make you more anxious and hyper-alert.
Maybe try to do some calming activities before going to bed?

It's possible that you are experiencing "exploding head syndrome". My grandmother has had the same kind of experiences, but hears people knocking on the doors or car horns blowing when she is falling asleep. She now has medication for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome)

If you're being startled just after you've fallen asleep, without an external trigger, could be hypnic jerk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnic_jerk).

It's nice to finally find out what this is called.
