Title: Binary ? or not Binary ?.....that is the question
Post by: neilep on 12/09/2005 20:17:11
Hi Cosmoligical Naked Scientific Wonder Peeps.

Binary systems are well popular eh ?...more popular than we first thought....is it possible that in the distant past our sun was part of a binary system ?

Neil where did you hear our solar system used to be binary? It's unlikely where would the other star have gone? Unless it's tiny [:)] and made from dark matter or something...

I didn't hear that it once was binary chummy.....I'm just displaying my subterranean intelligence by speculating and then demonstrating my sub human IQ by asking the question [:D][;)]

I just understood that Binary star systems are more widespread than originally accepted....so, I just wondered if in the past may the possibilty arisen where our star was part of a binary system.....hey !!...perhaps our sun was the baby star ?......probably not eh ? *eager to display that his fridge has more intelligence than himself*[;)]

Not likely, Neil. Whether stars form as single entities, or form a planetary disk, or become binaries is determined by the angular momentum of the nebula that contracts into the star(s). Angular momentum is conserved, so whatever was present as the protostar(s) began orbiting or the planetary disk formed is still there. So if the sun formed as part of a binary system, it would still be a binary system, and we would not be here to speculate.
