Itching after an insect bite can be quite bothersome, but it actually serves a purpose. When a mosquito or other insect bites you, it injects saliva into your skin to prevent your blood from clotting. This saliva contains proteins that your immune system reacts to, causing an inflammatory response. The itching sensation is a result of this immune response. However, scratching too much can actually make the itching worse and may even break the skin.
