Title: Skin Sensitivity...
Post by: moonfire on 31/07/2006 02:10:08
I have a question..yes, I can be serious too...Is skin more sensitive as we get older? ie...to sun, elements, etc Also, what about our dead skin...some reptiles shed...do we?  [:o)]

Skin certainly gets dryer as one gets older, and slower at repairing itself (just as the rest of one's body gets slower repairing itself as we get older).

We don't need to peel off the entire skin in the way that reptiles do as they grow, because our skin is more stretchable.  We do shed dead skin cells, lots of them, continually over time.

Thanks George, I knew about the dead skin cells and that is why I was curious...What besides moisturizer, water, grapes can slow down the process of aging?

Yeah, thats a great question. I use aloe to moisten sometimes, but it tends to be sticky! Lanolin is my preference, but it doesn't smell sweet and nice, but it leaves my skin feeling better! I am in a constant dry state, as my thyroid is bad and the meds do not help much! Drinking more water helps alot....Karen

Loretta, have you ever had your thyroid checked, low thyroid can cause weight gain , thinning hair, dry ichy skin and mood swings. There are many others, like memory loss or forgetfulness. I had all of the above, many things were helped by meds, but some not!

Yep, used to have hypothyroidism...it is in normal limits now!  Woo Hoo...key to change diet...sea salt/iodine...etc..hair is too thick..weight gain issue was eating wrong/not as much activity...kid and I danced a bit tonight and had my mom laughing tonight as we were goofing off..(He is coming out of his serious shell...he doesn't realize it!)memory loss/forgetfulness..that is possible lately..won't take meds, but will go back to what i did before...I have been lax lately...trying to behave with Hadrians little behavior modification program...but have not been behaving this week..darn it..

Sounds like a great evening. I hope Hadrians programs work for you!  How often do you have your thyroid checked. I know regardless I have to be checked every 60 days meds or no meds. Thyroid changes alot if I am not careful. I get so tired and I can tell somethings up! Almost through hubby out a couple times, but I blamed it on my thyroid, But we know what it really was. I just couldn't handle the situation back then. Its tough to swallow and still come out on top! I swallowed alot to stay married and took alot of blame, although he said it wasn't me! Whatever! new thought!

Have you been having dry flakey skin? or just texture or pigment changes, like age spots or something?

No, but I am out on the properties and the sun seems to be a bit extreme more to my skin...not dry and flaky...but texture changes yes...the elasticity is not as firm...hey, what do you mean by age spots??? hmmm, missy?  LOL

No way to reverse age – it is a one way process.

Probably know all of this, but Sun will accelerate skin ageing.  As you lose weight, the skin will become looser (particularly in older years, when the skin is already less flexible).  All that fat under the skin helps it keep soft and taught.  I have heard remarks to the effect that in old age you can have a good figure (trim, with little excess fat), or good skin (soft and taught), but not both.

I have a 7 year head start on you – you think I do not notice these things – just, I suppose, it is more acceptable for men than for women – women are supposed to look like they have only just passed through puberty right until the day they die, while men are allowed to have the 'lived in' look.  I know – life is not fair.

George, you are so funny!  I think you look great!!!  If I looked as great, then maybe I wouldn't panic...geez, I guess I am getting old now..:-(  The skin thing fooled me as I eat grapes, cover up and don't go outside to do anything really stupid like lay out in the sun...good grief, we get plenty of it here in the shade, in the car, in the house...my sister's skin looks really bad i feel sorry for her as people think I am the youngest...Trust, me there will not be no knife on my skin or anything like that done...least aggressive measures will be taken only like a strong sunblock...I guesss it put me in shock yesterday seeing my skin loose its elasticity...it is not bad, but still i noticed it...so sad..men look sophisticated with the "lived in" look...hehe  I will adjust but as I just turned 43...I am just kind of shocked...I will go and reaffirm myself and tell myself it is just skin... :-)  Also, maybe I will stay fat...if it helps...NOT!  hehe

Hi,

I'm new to this so bear with me.
Over the last 12-18 months I have delveloped brown patches which are often described as pigementation or age spots I believe? I have been told by the doctor this could be due to being on the contraceptive pill for too long a period of time.
I have already tried an electroysis/laster patch test with little result, not to mention a wide range of creams, scrubs etc.
Anyone got any advice what the best solution will be that will give definite/positive results not yet achieved please? I am running out of ideas!
