Title: The physics of elementary particles
Post by: ervin mccoy on 09/11/2008 00:02:42
The realisation that the great diversity of the world stems from a handful of elementary particles (http://www.thenakedscientists.com) acting under the influence of a few fundamental forces was one of the triumphs of twentieth century physics.

It was a shame they couldn't have stopped with just the three. Life would have been so much simpler.

Even better still if they could all be reduced to different configurations of single particle and force types - lol.

String, perhaps?

Even strings are thought to be of 2 types - open & closed.

how about just one: energy at it's most fundamental existence, manifesting itself beyond the ground state as a multiple, as more of itself packed into the next level where it manifests itself as a "particle", massless for the first range of "particles" and scaling up to that 'density' where mass becomes manifest. And from thereon>>>all the stuff we are and is.
Just a thought, finding all them different particle types and the behaviours and interactions-or not-hard to interpret as unique entities. All part of the same beginning stuff makes more sense, at least to my simple mind

How about a continuation, namely thongs?
Open and closed of course.
I will take up the torch...
And go where no other (except you and you and....Ah well..) have gone.

Sort of:)
Or will my idea backfire on me?

did you say  you'll take up the croth and forgot the c?

Now, would that be c?
Or as I like to put it, 'c'torh?

It's truly a amalgam of ideas.
Even though they're not dental
More mental:)

To be honest I've never liked the subject. But look at the particle physics images depositphotos.com/photos/particle-physics.html that accompany particle physics research, which not only serve as fascinating illustrations, but also play a crucial role in communicating scientific concepts to a wide audience. They allow us to visualize phenomena that are otherwise inaccessible to our direct perception and provide a glimpse into the complex structure of our Universe.

The images looked sorta pretty but were useless in trying to visualize any scientific concept.
