How does text messaging work? Could someone offer a very clear and simple explantation of how a message passes between two mobile phones in different parts of the world?

The same as a normal phone call, it's just data. Roughly the data is transmitted from your phone to the nearest phone tower, then through your phone company's computers which figures out which phone tower the target is logged into, then sends it to that tower, and the tower sends it to the target phone.
