Title: Why would mascara cause sneezing?
Post by: John MacAlister on 20/10/2010 11:30:08
John MacAlister  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris,

Great show you have. i usually listen to you (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) on 702/567 with Redi, and i finally decided to download your podcasts so i can listen to your show more often as i am on the road a lot during the day.

I just have a quick question that i hope you can help me with. Every morning when my wife puts her mascara on, she sneezes. It's quite funny as I have realized how much time is left before we leave the house in the morning by the number of sneezes my wife makes.

Hope you can help.

Thanks

John

What do you think?

Ironic that mascara can double for sniff snuff.
Tickle the little nose hair from inhaling airborne dust from the application of the material.

It sounds more like photic sneezing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photic_sneezing) than inhaling eye make-up,

Perhaps applying the makeup involves exposure to an unusually bright light, close to the mirror.

Perhaps your wife should try putting the mascara around her eyes instead of shoving it up her nose!

OK, I'll go stand in the corner for a while.

I known of some people can just look up and face the suns heat would bring on a cascade of sneezes.

White mascara? I will be in the other corner!
