Dear Sires, Lady Sires and Pious Sires (erhhm..Messires ?...*chortle*)
Ahem...anyway.
Whilst driving my Toyota Previa (it'll be three years old this August)...the other day..I heard a ' twang ' come from behind me inside the car....it was the distinct sound of falling metal. When I got home, I found this ' thing ' on the floor of the car !!
Do you have any idea what it is ?

The thing is seen here expertly modeled by my son , who is also available for weddings, Barmitvahs and any other ' thing-held-in-hand 'related function !
I would welcome your thing related answers as I have no idea nor can I find any obvious cavity where this has sprung from !!
This is not a quiz...I really don't know what it is !! [???] [???]
-
Neily It looks like the spring tensioner for your seat in the car.. probably the one you were sitting on. Get in your car and try to adjust your seat back forward and back.. you know the reclining part.. You may find that it will not work properly! That is probably it..!!!
-
Cripes !!...It does seem to be working alright though Karen Mam !
I have driven the car (sorry..I mean I have chauffeured the family) a fair few times since then..BUT..I will check all the other seat belts too !!
-
It's a fossilised tapeworm. They're a delicacy in Japan so I reckon someone who was putting your car together dropped it from his lunchbox.

Do you mean as in Linford Christies Lunchbox ?? [:o] [:o]
-
Is there anything not functioning properly? In the car I mean.
-
Go to the dealer and ask them to identify it. Since it is under 3 years old, it is probably still in warranty. 36,000 miles is hard to accumulate in the UK.
-
It looks very much like a springy coil thing.

No Neily, not the seat belts... The reclining part of the front seats have those spring
tensioners that help the seat come forward or lie back...You know when you adjust them
so you can relax.. Check where the back of the seat meets the seat you sit on.. on the
side by your door, There should be a Joint, covered plastic in plastic case!!
take the cover off and see if that spring popped out.. Tell you what..I believe you
found the spring behind or beside your seat.. maybe close to your left arm area just
behind your seat in the floor. eh??? Tell me exactly where you found it..? I will try
to get you a diagram.. They are generally easy to fix, if the part that held the spring
did not break..
-
Check this out your seat and how the spring would work!
[diagram=312_0]
When you pull the lever back it should bring the seat back up into upright position! I think your spring just popped off or the anchor post that holds the long end broke or slipped out of its position!

Only the driver [:D]

6 million? I bet they could make 1 on Blue Peter with a couple of cereal packets and some sticky-back plastic.

Are we about to sail? We are if the Blue Peter is on the masthead. Back to the ship, you jack-tars, unless you want a flogging.

Don't mention the golden rivet

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Peter_%28flag%29 - the letter "P" if you didn't know. The golden rivet is folk lore only.

Wot about when the sliding thing goes??? Thats a lot mor complicated, than just the seat going back or forwrd!!!
-
That generally needs cleaned and make sure it is soaped.. I run a nice bar of soap along the metal track.. wax works well to to keep it moving nicely!
-
Karen, I am impressed you identified the spring and where it goes so quickly. How did you know?
