Dear Toaster Experts,
Here is my four slotted toaster !

Nice eh ?
well, not really , because the right hand pair of slots don't work anymore ! *le sigh*
To save confusion I have labeled them !!
There was no "ppfffft" or "fizzzzzzzz" or "bang" or smoke.....all that happens is that the right hand side will not stay down anymore !!..any tips as to what might have caused this ?...
Some warm buttered toast will be offered for any toaster fixing suggestions !

Quiz answer.... it looks like the back vents of my bread maker machine,so my guess would be it is the back vents of your bread machine also!

There are many different mechanical methods used to hold the toast down in place for toasting.
One of those methods used, at least in ours, which is a fairly new toaster is an electrical switch that holds the toast down when it is hooked up to electricity. If there is no power to that switch, the toast will fail to stay down in the proper position for toasting.
1. Could be a power supply to that electrically controlled switch .
2. Could be that the detent mechanism which holds it in place is somehow out f adjustment or may have a chunk of waffle or something hung up in it, perhaps a (delicious hunk of English muffin?)
3. Could be the whole unit failed
If your toaster does not have an electrically controlled detent or latching mechanism it may also be out of adjustment, or fouled in some way.
It may have a completely mechanical or bi-metallic controlled latch or detent,
depending on your toaster. If this is the case it could be disconnected, or out of adjustment or perhaps jammed with debris.
A bi-metallic controlled latch has two pieces of different kinds of metal as I know it, and when they are heated up one of them expands faster then the other causing it to move and bend, and it uses this to method to operate that thermostat mechanism on that kind of toaster.
my suggestion is to take it apart and eyeball it. if you see an obviously burnt switch or detent then replace it or go down town and get a new one or have it repaired at a small appliance repair shop!
It could be not worth the repair cost and you may be better off to junk it and spring for a new one.. compare prices on replacement model of same quality or repair costs... You could fix it your self.. as I see you have improved on your screwing capabilities.. on your last fix it project!

The element is probably gone. If no current is flowing it will not only not get hot but the solenoid which holds the lever in place won't work either. When you hold down the lever, does the element get hot? I suspect it doesn't.

(Assuming no-one was poking around with sharp objects...)
Elements in toasters typically fail when a crumb (or worse, some sticky stuff from a Pop-Tart or similar) gets stuck on the element. This crumb carbonises and stops the heat leaving that spot of the element so it locally overheats and burns out. This needn't be dramatic.
Look really carefully at the element on each side of the section which doesn't work, and see if you can see the break, or lodged crumb.
These days toasters are typically absolutely designed not to be taken apart (they'll have one or more Torx/Security-Torx/trianglar-headed screws, or worse) and quite honestly they're so ridiculously cheap that it's not even worth a hobbyist trying to repair them. Then again, this looks like a more upmarket toaster...
Moral of the story:
1) be careful not to force feed mal-formed bread slices into toasters (more likely to touch elements or have bits fall off)
2) if you do have a bit-fell-off incident then switch off and unplug the toaster immediately and dislodge the loose bit before resuming toasting.
Mmmmm.... toast and marmite ... toast and marmalade ... toast and honey ... cheese on toast ... toasty = tasty [:P]

You are right that it's probably a ' write off ' ..In the mean time...we're conducting our own study as to how livable a two slotted toaster is for a family of six !!!....I think even I know what the conclusion will be !!

Is there not a switch or a tick box somewhere?
A lot of these toasters have a switch where you can turn off the starboard slots to save power. Perhaps that has gone.
...or just get one of Seany's USB toasters.
