Title: How do I train a kitten to use a litter tray?
Post by: PmbPhy on 03/10/2015 12:47:31
How do I train a kitten to poopinzee in das litter boxen?  [;D]

I just got two adormabale kittens. I uploader a photo of both of them. They're just soooooo cute. [:D]
Anyway, the two can be easily distinguished from each other. I just can't figure out what happened because they were litter trained when I got them two weeks ago. There are two of them, one black an one white. The black one is Fwuffy and the other one is Scooter. They're sooo cute. :) They have to be. Otherwise I'd probably have killed them by now. I'm fairly sure that it's Scooter that's leaving me little presents by the door and in now in the bath tub. This is something new to me.

You must put out a litter box with cat litter they will accept.. and keep it clean. You may need two litter boxes depending upon the personal preferences of your new feline overlords.

It is a common misconceptions that you own them.

My sister had that same problem with a kitten-she was using her bath tub. I suggested she take the pooh out of the tub and place it in the litter box for the cat to see. and it worked ! Maybe try that, see if it works.

You need to follow the kitten around with the litter box, when you see signs it is ready to do its business. Then you place the kitten in the box so it can go. This may be after it eats or drinks. It will learn to associate the two.

I was able to train a pup to go on pee pads in one try, by allowing it to pee where it wanted to the first time it entered my house. I then placed the pee pad at that location, even though this was not optimized for me. Maybe you can go with the flow and place a litter box in the tub for now. Once the pup or kitten starts to use the litter box (put him in it) the box can be moved outside the tub. He will like the ability to bury his droppings and will prefer the litter box once he catches on.

Difficult balance between keeping the tray clean and leaving just enough odor from last time to remind him where to go next time - dogs seem a bit quicker on the uptake. One possibility is to keep each cat in a cage for a while: they soon organise themselves to pee and poo in one place, then you leave the cage door open and they find their way back to the chosen spot. But you may need separate cages - I think they don't like using each other's spots, particularly if they are the same sex and marking their territories, which may explain Scooter's preference for the bathtub.

What always impressed me about cats and dogs is the speed with which they learn the difference between indoors and outdoors, and how to contain and control their excretions. Western humans tend to urinate and defecate anywhere and everywhere, usually whilst their grandparents are eating, for years and years, but other species get the hang of it within a few days of adoption. Probably because there is no doggy disposable diaper industry.

I reread your post and realized the problem. you said they were litter trained when you got them. There could be 2 reasons for this :
the litterbox is not clean enough for one of them so they are going somewhere else
or
Some cats will not go in a litterbox if another cat is using it. This is what I think is happening. I guess you should try a 2nd litterbox or let them outside.
