Title: The Science of Thirst !
Post by: neilep on 14/09/2006 17:16:55
Dearest Singularly Minded Clever Orientated Peeps,

I'm thirsty.....so I had a drink..I'm not thirsty anymore !..YAYYYY !!

 1) But, I understand it's not really good to let your body get to stage when it is thirsty !..is this right ?

Also, though quenching a thirst always feels good..I gather the benefits of consuming thirst quenching liquid goodness does not come into effect until much later... 2) .so..what is the triggering mechanism that tells you that your thirst is quenched ?.. 3)is there a ' Thirst meter ' in my tummy ?

...and finally.. 4).what exactly is the science of being thirsty ?... 5).what happens to the body as it begins to sense you need your thirst quenching ?

Men are the same as women, just inside out !

I heard Neil from a doctor one time if you are in need water and feel that thirst sensation it is a sign of dehydration...? I like the thirst meter statement...LOL

Your body gets dehydrated your lips and mouth become dry I think your body is like a sponge and everything absorbs the water and keeps the body comefortably hydrated , I tend to get dehydrated and its always late and takes a while to rehydrate.. My skin gets dry and feels less soft when I am dehydrated. So when I am drinking84 ozs a day, my skin becomes very smooth and my complection improves by leaps and bounds, less blemishes etc. Interesting, although I would like to know the mechanics behind it too!

I think the sponge is a good analogy...from the inside out...

No, I am not really sure that sponge is the right analogy.

The problem is that the body needs a certain balance of salt and water.  If you are dehydrated, then it means that your blood has become too salty, and if you have too much water (which is also dangerous), then your blood in effect has too little salt.  One of the dangers that athletes have is that as the sweat, the replace the water they lose, but forget to replace the salt, and so risk death from water poisoning (i.e. salt deficiency).

There are other substances beside common salt (Sodium Chloride)  that can become too concentrated, or too dilute; but salt is the most dominant one, and the one that will normally have the most immediate effect.

Ofcourse, you can lose water and salt in equal proportions, and so retain the balance, but then you will simply be losing the ability to sweat (and thus risk overheating), and be losing blood volume, and risk death from excessively low blood pressure.

You are right I am sure George...sponge is not really a good analogy...I know you are also correct about too much water as my doctor warned me about that as I can drink more than enough if I am not careful...so I have to pull back on water consumption...something to do with valuable minerals
