Why does rusting of iron objects occur more quickly in coastal area than in deserts?

Salt in the atmosphere does the trick. I had a Citroen when I lived near the coast in Scotland. There wasn't too much of it left when it went away to the scrap yard. The body seemed to be consist mainly of paint.
