A photoplethysmograph (PPG) is an optically obtained plethysmograph ... A PPG is often obtained by using a pulse oximeter which illuminates the skin and measures changes in light absorption ... PPGs can be obtained from transmissive absorption (as at the finger tip)

Light is part of an EM spectrum with colors determined by wavelength.
You can choose very short wavelength light (X-Rays and Gamma-Rays), and it will pass through the human body, showing details of what is inside.

It does throw up the question of whether our skin can, at least partially, become transparent. - I'm not sure how pigment works in our bodies and what colour we would be without any of it - ? .... If nothing else I assume we would be quite red, what wil all that blooooood!!! [:D]

Gamma radiation can go right through you, and when it does it most probably will cause you a health risk. And that's 'light' too :)

If it goes right through then you will be fine - it's when it is stopped by something that you might get a problem.

Visible light can be used to image structures in skin up to 2mm depth apparently ...
SIAscopy measures the amount of haemoglobin, melanin and collagen in the stratum corneum, epidermis and dermis to a depth of 2 mm

Yeah - I had thought of them peeps. Seems a strange condition - and of course being about as pale as it's possible to be I guess they want to stay out of the sun too.

While not really letting light pass through you. The "perfect camouflage" is when one can take an image of what is behind you, and project the image in front of you. A great theme for science-fiction books.
However, some octopi can essentially do this, changing their skin coloration to match whatever is behind them.
(and, yes, I read that the plural of octopus is ambiguous).

The thumbnails are new, and I guess it has to do with some quirk of a update of the server. That we can't post movies is just a choice TNS has made. I don't mind :) although I do like to be able to play the movie 'embedded' in the post myself.
