I think it should pass but do not allow his stools to go without thourough inspection so dawn the gloves and prepare to examine..but with its weight I would have him go in a potty chair if you have one so if it does come out which it should then it won't sink into the neck of the toilet without notice considering its weight!

Watch out for blockage  or extreme difficulty doing the business. fiber fiber fiber! although rice and such may do better to bind itself around it and move it along...really you should seek advice ..professional..that is...

Thank ewe also Karen...he is as happy as a lark....yes we will have him do his poo poo in a potty...I will recover the offending item and will report here.

Cripes, if I knew he was going to swallow it I would have written a request for next weeks lottery numbers to be printed on it when he craps it out ?....it happens you know !!

Some cultures ask the spirits for guidance by swallowing messages and waiting for the answer to be poo- pood out !!

If he only swallowed one there is no problem. If he swallowed a magnet as well then they could stick together inside his intestines and become stuck. Only swallowing one will not be a problem ,as the ball is mostly a very good grade of steel, with a chrome coating, and the small amount that will dissolve inside the stomach will be harmless. If the ball does not "drop out" after 24 hours the best would be to Xray and see where it is, and if there is something else there as well.

If he swallowed the magnet, there is a light inside, most probably a small incandescent lamp inside the plastic. The magnet is made from Samarium Cobalt alloy, which is somewhat soluble in stomach acid, but which is also likely not to be harmful unless your son makes a habit of swallowing them.

Best would be the old standby of a teaspoon of Castor Oil, which will serve 2 functions. It will purge out his bowels rapidly, and, more importantly, the bad taste will reinforce the warning not to swallow toys in the future.

Just don't panic, and remember that small toys and children often do not go together.

That sounds about par for course... So as long as he is breathing and you stand gaurd over the doo, then I would say it should pass.. lottery numbers may have been a great idea.. LOL..That is certainly an unusual cultural tradition!

LOL..LOL...

Keep in mind 3 to 5 year olds still tend to explore with their mouths and at this age swallowing foreign objects is a fun exploration to try.. I was a rock girl!..LOL...

If he doesn't poo then I would be more inclined to seek a picture of the insides!!!

Magnetix Magnetic Building Set Recall Expanded
Serious Injuries Continue to be Reported to CPSC

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Additional serious injuries to children reported following the March 31, 2006 recall announcement of Magnetix Magnetic Building Sets have prompted the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Mega Brands America, Inc. ("Mega Brands") (the new owner of Rose Art Industries, Inc.) to announce an expanded recall. In excess of 4 million units are involved. The recall includes all sets, except newer Magnetix sets sold since March 31, 2006, that are age-labeled 6+ and sets that contain the following caution label:

"CAUTION: Do not ingest or inhale magnets.
Attraction of magnets in the body may cause
serious injury and require immediate medical care."

Mega Brands advises that sets currently at retail better retain magnets due to improved quality control, material and design changes. These products are not included in the recall.

To date, CPSC and Mega Brands are aware of one death, one aspiration and 27 intestinal injuries. Emergency surgical intervention was needed in all but one case. At least 1,500 incidents of magnets separating from the building pieces have been reported. Although the hazard was initially thought to be a problem primarily for children younger than six, it has since been learned that at least ten injuries involved children between the ages of 6 and 11 years old.

If a child swallows more than one tiny powerful magnet detached from the plastic building pieces or one such magnet and a metallic object, the objects can attract to each other inside the intestines and cause perforations and/or blockage, which can be fatal, if not treated immediately.

"CPSC is deeply concerned about the dangers that small, powerful magnets can pose to children if swallowed," said CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. "In order for any product recall to be effective in protecting consumers, we must significantly reduce incidents and injuries from occurring after the recall is announced." Mega Brands has been cooperative in this expanded recall.

These older sets, which were manufactured in China, contain up to 250 plastic building pieces and 1/2-inch diameter steel balls. The building pieces include 1 1/2-inch squares, 1-inch triangles, cylinder rods, flexors, connectors, x-tenders, and curves and come in an assortment of colors such as metallic, primary, translucent, and glow in the dark.

Mass merchants and other toy and arts and crafts stores sold the sets nationwide for between $20 and $60, depending on the size of the set.

Consumers should stop using the recalled magnetic sets immediately and contact Mega Brands for a comparable replacement toy. If consumers are uncertain as to whether their product is being recalled, they can contact Mega Brands at (800) 779-7122 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's Web site at www.megabrands.com

The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately report any incidents of loose magnets to the CPSC Hotline at (800) 638-2772 or to the CPSC Web site at www.cpsc.gov

Abdominal pain, fever and vomiting would be signs that there is a blockage or gut perforation.
Giving castor oil could confuse matters as it could cause vomiting and/or colic...

Castor oil is considered safe in proper doses for conventional uses as a laxative. However, side effects can include abdominal pain or cramping, colic, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea... Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use castor oil, nor should people with intestinal blockage, acute inflammatory intestinal disease, appendicitis, or abdominal pain.

I'm with RD.. I think castor oil has more nasty side effects than goodness. Personally I wouldn't put my child through that potential.
Do you guys not have a poisons information line you can ring?  or a parenting helpline? Although I suspect it will just work its way through the system, I'd still be taking him to see a GP when you can. (just to be sure)  it's probably not an emergency case (unless he starts having difficulty breathing) but maybe a check to reassure yourself from a real doctor. (anyways that's what I would do though we have medicare here and other stuff to help)

Hi Neil. It must be catching. My little 5 year old girl swallowed a wishbone shaped plastic hair clip (looks like wishbone legs with feet on the ends of each wishbone leg) from the toy Girl's World. Apparently it hurt going down the throat but once in the stomach she said she was OK. Obviously we went to A&E on Saturday evening as soon as it happened. It's seethrough plastic so didn't show on X-Ray. Do you think the due to its shape it may get lodged in the intestine or not make it out of the Pyloric Sphincter? She seems fine 24 hours later. No sign of it yet, how long does something like this take to go through the human body? Blimey, kids scare the begeezers out of you sometimes!

Has this ball bearing put in an appearance yet, sheepy? Or are you up to your elbows in something unmentionable?

Had I been around at the time of this occurrence, I would have suggested that you refrain from feeding the boy brat on anything which might result in a rather aromatic end product.

Thank Jna Your advice is greatly appreciated. I have stepped away from the Castor oil. NHS direct did eventually ring back and the doctor said that (like ewe mentioned) unless he has some difficulty which he feels will not occur then there is very little to worry about. However, it's now Monday morning and as far as we can tell he has not passed it. It erhmm..has not been fun...digging around for the ball...however he is a once a day lad and now he is back at nursery. We are having some doubts as to whether he really did swallow it. I was not there. he was playing with it and then wifey turned around to see him do a swallowing motion and there was no sign of the ball..there is still no sign of the ball anywhere !  I suspect we will still take him to get X-rayd...as ewe say...for peace of mind.

Hi Ellie,

Gosh have your daughter and my son decided to perform as a duet ?
I am so sorry. Ewe must be worried sick. I wish I could give you some advice and would hope that the advice I have wonderfully received here helps ewe too. How  is she today ?..I bet she is fine. Please do let us know how she gets on and I would expect it to take anything from 24-48 hours !..maybe even longer considering simple small round ball has yet to appear out from my boys exit hole !!

Thanks Don...I am pleased to announce that whilst on the 3rd floor of a big shop my son stuck his backside out the window and did this:

Clearly his own poo poo has ' manured' the ball to ever so slightly larger proportions !

Fact is, he still has not shot the ball out of the cannon yet and like I have mentiond in my response to JnA, there are now a few doubts creeping in. We may have just jumped hastily to a wrong conclusion but the fact remains...the ball is now missing and he does have a tendency to stick things in his gob !

I'm glad that everything went well. Sheesh kids, I sometimes feel they are all in a secret conspiracy just to scare their family. Makes me somewhat glad I don't have my own kids, but my great-nieces and nephews have been (and still are) making up for it.

... do ewe think it will now rust and stuff ? I know it has no iron in it..but if left de-chromed will it develop cold sores ?

The magnetixs balls are described as "steel". Steel is ~98% iron, which will rust without some sort of barrier protection (that's what the chromium coating was for). Coating it with oil (e.g. WD40) and sealing it in a ziplock bag (air removed) would be a cheap way to preserve its current appearance for a decade until it is required for embarrassment purposes. Might want to preserve a chromed ball in a similar manner (separate bag) for comparison purposes: the chrome coat must be rather thin to have been removed so readily.

It's 1.5cm long

Well this is the spikey item she swallowed. No sign of it yet.

Would stomach acids melt/disintigrate plastic?
The doctor didn't seem to think so.

Fingers crossed we find it as something this shape is more likely to get lodged inside...I was kind of hoping for something more bead shaped or round for safety. I've been told to feed her "fibre, fibre & more fibre"

Not sure I'll get as good an after souvenir as Neil LOL
But one things for sure, I won't be putting the hair accessory back in her hair!!

You really should encase the feeshus ball in resin. [;D] It'll make a great paper weight and it'll come in handy when you need to embarrass the boy later in life. [^] It's pointless to try and embarrass a 3 year old, but it will make a great wedding present. Mwaaaaahaaaahaaaahaaaahaaaa

Thanks MonikaS...I think I will trek to a tropical rain forest and let Feeshus Ball get encased in some Amber !...then...voila !!....on their millionth year anniversary I will present them with it as a gift !.....sorted !

Hmmmmm....*sheepy ponders*....there's something not quite right there is there ?..I just can't quite put my finger on it !

Ok ...I think I'll go with the resin......next stop my local arts & crafts all nighter !

I made a hemispherical resin paperweight XX years ago.
The resin stuff really stinks and heats up as it sets, (exothermic reaction),
particularly if you put too much hardener in like I did.

Trapped air bubbles are a problem. Use the least amount of hardener possible to set:
the longer set time gives the air bubbles time to reach the surface before it solidifies.

You'll have to find some way of suspending the ball in the centre of the mould,
e.g. attach the ball to a little post of resin made by filling a 2" bit of drinking straw with resin...

To have your flower [or feeshus ball] preserved and encapsulated are priced £63.95  [[:0]] per paperweight for a 2.5 "
and £86.90  [[:0]] for a 3" paperweight.

[A ziplock bag and a squirt of WD40 is a lot cheaper].

But it's not as cool as a resin paperweight! And the embarrassment factor is a lot smaller. I really think Neil should do it himself, makes it even better as a wedding gift for the boy later in life.

I can allmost hear the dialog:
Neil: Here, I got a present for you. Do you know what this is?
James: <shaking his head wearily, he knows his dad after all>
Neil: <explaining the story of planet Feeshus in all its g(l)ory detail>
James: <blushing furiously, and starts to curse his dad>
James'-wife to be: Why are you blushing?
Neil: <explains again>
James'-wife to be: <roars with laughter>

If you do go with the resin paperweight idea include a chromed ball for comparison purposes...

Hi neil, i know this is months after the event, two things realy !
firstly, as long as the object wasnt a " bulgarian brolly ball " he will be fine, and secondly, if he swallowed it, how the "tom dooley" have you got it in your hand, or do you have one of those endescope things ?

i take it the young chap is fine ?

My son did the same thing.

For a neat and un-fragrant way to search for a similar metallic object (it must beat least partly iron or steel to be attracted to magnets) try this.

1. Turn off the water on the toilet and flush to remove as much water as possible.
2. Lift up the lid and line the toilet bowl with a kitchen size trash bag, fold over the edges and put the seat back down.
3. Let them do their business.
4. Take the trash bag with its' "contents," fold up the top to keep the smell in. Flatten down the "contents" to about 1/4", then take a strong magnetic and slide it over the top of the "contents" until you find the metallic object.

It works like a piece of cake with something like a ball bearing.

I think you're lucky it was chromium-plated and not nickel-plated.
Nickel (if freshly cut nickel-foil against the skin is anything to go by) could make for unimaginably "itchy" insides which wouldn't bear thinking about.
