Title: Do diswashers remove mould?
Post by: Lise Sharkey on 01/03/2011 05:30:03
Lise Sharkey asked the Naked Scientists:

Is it dangerous to eat food off a plate that has had mouldy food on it but has then been put through a dishwasher?

What do you think?

I would have thought the answer is no; if detergent is used and the dishwasher is run at over 50 degrees C then the likelihood of any pathogens surviving in appreciable numbers (that is, an infectious dose) is extremely remote.

If the plate looks clean it is probably clean enough, but I'd put it through the wash again anyway.
