General Science / Is it true that alcohol makes us “gain” weight in two ways?
« on: 16/01/2012 15:37:11 »

Is it true that alcohol makes us “gain” weight in two ways?:
1.   For the calories of the drink itself.
2.   For the consequent slowdown of our metabolism due to alcohol consumption.
Is this true? How true?
We can know how many calories are there in alcohol drinks, but how much is our metabolism slowed down?

Thank you
Emilio

General Science / Can humans “taste like chicken?
« on: 20/01/2011 12:41:51 »

Let’s say we get an egg from a woman’s ovary, let’s say –for the sake of argument— we can make it grow to an adequate size (proportional to the woman as the chicken’s egg is to the chicken)… let’s say we poach it (can’t hard boil it because it lacks a shell)… what would it taste like? (let´s add salt, of course).

So... do humans “taste like chicken”? [:o]

General Science / artificial electromagnetic field for Mars?
« on: 29/04/2010 13:19:57 »

If we were to build huge magnets –electromagnets— and (just as satellites) make them orbit Mars, with solar panels to charge them… could we generate an electromagnetic field (such as Earth’s) and improve the planet’s habitability?
And, for that matter… could we do the same here in Earth to benefit our planet?
Thank you
Emilio

General Science / is there a second sonic boom upon reaching mach 2?
« on: 26/04/2010 16:19:39 »
Hello, when a plane reaches the speed of sound, and breaks the sound barrier there is a loud bomm... I would like to know if there is a second sonic boom upon reaching mach 2

Thank you
Emilio

General Science / If we run faster to Rocky’s Theme, will we love deeper to Lara’s Theme?
« on: 08/04/2010 14:11:29 »

If we run faster to Rocky’s Theme, will we love deeper to Lara’s Theme (or for that matter be a better secret agent when we listen to James Bond Theme?)  [;)]

General Science / are there underground tides?
« on: 25/06/2009 19:07:24 »
If the moon’s gravitational pull affects tides, shouldn’t it also affect the huge amounts of water underground? And for that matter, can there be some kind of "tide" in the mountains that hold water inside?
 [???] [???]

thanks

General Science / All other things being equal, who would dehydrate more?
« on: 21/06/2009 17:59:21 »

Suppose 2 runners are running a marathon. Both have equal physical attributes, both have the same size and weight, both hydrate equally during the race and have the same sweat ratio... but one of them regularly spits out saliva.  Will he dehydrate more?

thanks

General Science / What would happen if all the “1’s” and “0’s” suddenly and simultaneously reverse
« on: 17/06/2009 14:49:35 »

What would happen if all the “1’s” and “0’s” which represent all data
suddenly and simultaneously reversed (that is, the 1s turn to 0s and the 0s turn to 1s)?

thanks

General Science / The more intelligent a dog is, the harder it is to train?
« on: 16/06/2009 15:40:21 »

Is it true that the more intelligent a dog is, the harder it will be to train?

Thanks

Physiology & Medicine / Does mental and/or behavioural conditions such as autism affect animals?
« on: 16/06/2009 15:35:41 »

Is there any evidence to support that. Has there been any experiments?
How about schizophrenia?

thanks

General Science / Why does vodka pour slower from a bottle with a valve when its very cold?
« on: 02/06/2009 18:10:01 »

I have a vodka bottle in my freezer (very nice habit [;)]). The bottle happens to have a valve (frustrating after several servings [::)])... I've noticed that when I pour vodka from a bottle at room temperature it flows faster than when I pour from the chilled bottle... why?

Thanks

General Science / Why complementary colors go so well together?
« on: 27/05/2009 14:45:22 »
We call complementary colors pairs of colors that are of “opposite” hue in some color model, and are called complementary colors, because together they complete the spectrum.

Is there any scientific reason we see complementary colors and think they go very well together?
Thanks

General Science / How many marbles would fit inside the Earth if it were hollow?
« on: 22/05/2009 14:01:32 »

Ok, how many marbles would fit inside the Earth if it were hollow?

More than six I guess...  [;D]

General Science / What addiction develops when a substance is administered unawares?
« on: 21/05/2009 16:08:32 »

If someone were to be given a drug without his knowledge, let’s say they administer it orally in different kinds of food and in different doses would the subject become addicted?
Probably the subject would, but would the addiction be different in any way? Stronger? Weaker? More easy to overcome once known by the subject?
Would the subject know what he craves for due to his addiction?
Thanks
Emilio

That CAN'T be true! / when we shut off the light in a room, what is the "speed" of darkness?
« on: 13/05/2009 18:20:59 »
Ok, it gets dark pretty fast....  [;D]
