Alchemy gave rise to the modern science of chemistry, so I wouldn't say it's useless. However, if you're asking if you can learn how to turn lead into gold, then no-one can teach you.

Yes, it is pretty much a dead end in terms of turning lead into gold. You can do it, but it is no good financially or practically.
