Title: What was the result of Earth Hour?
Post by: Emilio Romero on 30/03/2009 20:55:53

Did it work? Was it worthwhile? Does it leave any solid conclusions?

Did it work?
Depends on what it was supposed to do.If the answer to that is nothing then it probably worked.
Quote
Was it worthwhile?
Depends again. If it was to make those who took part feel good about them self. Then probably yes.

Does it leave any solid conclusions?
That living in the dark is not much fun?.

The point of Earth hour is to raise awareness... it probably did some of that.

It didn't raise my awareness. I've never heard of it.

I totally forgot about it! [:I]

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

I didn't have my light on then anyway.

Am I good?  [:)]

Well no-one told me about Earth hour.

But now you are aware of it.. so it's still achieving it's purpose..

because, let's face it, the earth will be more saved if people didn't drive around the streets looking to see how many people turned off their lights, fly in planes quite so much or fill in earth hour with other activities that will perhaps be more prominent in nine months time.

I must admit, I was wondering how people would fill their time if they couldn't see anything and the "9 months later" activities did spring to mind. But what would they do for the other 59 minutes?  [;D]

59 mins 45 secs actually.(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Fexpressions%2F7.gif&hash=7215e10a18a22358e97e1865032a26b8)

I seriously doubt that... ("2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour"... no way!!)

Hubby insisted that our family participate.  We didn't go 100%, but I think overall we did pretty well.  We turned out all of the lights and appliances, but kept 1 tv running.  We watched movies in the dark for a few hours.  It was nice. [:)]

from http://sydney.zpages.com.au/population-of-sydney/ (http://sydney.zpages.com.au/population-of-sydney/)

Sydney is the most populous city in Australia, with a metropolitan population estimated at 3.9 million residents, based on census data from 2004.

3.9 million people, 2.2 million homes & businesses switched off their lights? 1.78 people per house/business? That doesn't sound quite right to me.

Helllooooo !!! Wow!!!

Quoting Sharon Begley from Newsweek
http://www.newsweek.com/id/189293

“But while you're doing all that to reduce the world's energy use and cut emissions of greenhouse gases, keep this in mind: even if we scale up existing technologies to mind-bending levels, such as finishing one nuclear plant every other day for the next 40 years, we'll still fall short of how much low-carbon energy will be needed to keep atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide below what scientists now recognize as the point of no return.”
...
“Lewis's numbers show the enormous challenge we face. The world used 14 trillion watts (14 terawatts) of power in 2006. Assuming minimal population growth (to 9 billion people), slow economic growth (1.6 percent a year, practically recession level) and—this is key—unprecedented energy efficiency (improvements of 500 percent relative to current U.S. levels, worldwide), it will use 28 terawatts in 2050. (In a business-as-usual scenario, we would need 45 terawatts.) Simple physics shows that in order to keep CO2 to 450 ppm, 26.5 of those terawatts must be zero-carbon. That's a lot of solar, wind, hydro, biofuels and nuclear, especially since renewables kicked in a measly 0.2 terawatts in 2006 and nuclear provided 0.9 terawatts. Are you a fan of nuclear? To get 10 terawatts, less than half of what we'll need in 2050, Lewis calculates, we'd have to build 10,000 reactors, or one every other day starting now. Do you like wind? If you use every single breeze that blows on land, you'll get 10 or 15 terawatts. Since it's impossible to capture all the wind, a more realistic number is 3 terawatts, or 1 million state-of-the art turbines, and even that requires storing the energy—something we don't know how to do—for when the wind doesn't blow. Solar? To get 10 terawatts by 2050, Lewis calculates, we'd need to cover 1 million roofs with panels every day from now until then. "It would take an army," he says. Obama promised green jobs, but still.”
...
“Hence the need for Nobel-caliber discoveries. Lewis's research is on artificial photosynthesis, in which a material (to be determined, thus the research) absorbs sunlight and water and produces hydrogen for fuel but zero CO2.”
