Nothing ever does.
It's a hypothetical ideal where absolutely everyone is totally immune.
And you can't do it- not least because the virus changes and people do too.

A vaccine can't do it (because you can't administer it to everyone- some will be allergic or whatever)
And you can't even do it by allowing the virus to run riot- because it will always miss some people- even if it's just newborn babies.
But what the vaccine did was save lives.
It did that two ways- firstly (and obviously) it reduced the harm in people who were exposed (They were less likely to get covid, less likely to have severe symptoms, less likely to get  long covid and less likely to die.)

So the vaccine is an unequivocally good thing.

The second way the vaccine saved lives was to slow the transmission of the virus through the population, thereby making it easier for healthcare systems to deal with those severely affected.

The point is that, by reducing the spread of the virus, vaccination got us much closer to herd immunity than we would have got without it.
And it did so without mass human sacrifice which is what the traditional type of "herd immunity" means.

PC seems to favour the version with the bigger death toll.

He doesn't seem to want to say why.

It's an approximation, a leftover from Newtonian physics.
It falls apart at extremes. For instance near a black hole, the inverse square law has your weight (force required to maintain a constant altitude) approaching some finite quantity, where in reality, at the EH, no force is enough to do that.

It also falls apart for great distance since spacetime isn't Minkowskian at the largest scales. There cannot be a global inertial frame, and the inverse square law I think is a property of an inertial frame.

You forgot to say anything meaningful.

Were you planning to add something like " about 1 person in 50 has had the virus and 100,000 of them died, so if we let the other 95% catch it we could expect a worst case death toll of about 50 times 100,000 i.e. about 5 million."?

That's certainly an answer to the question "Why should I be bothered with lockdown? " unless you feel that 5 million dead is a reasonable price to pay for your selfishness.

But it does raise an interesting point.
There was a conference where a bunch of nazi scientists (I use the term loosely) under the direction of their government all pointed out "problems" with Einstein's theories.
He was asked what he thought about such a powerful and prestigious group  attacking his ideas.
His response was that, if they were actually correct, then a single undergraduate student pointing it out would be all that was needed.

So, we had a situation where the political forces went the other way- the nazi government was determined to undermine Einstein and his ideas.
Great  blessings of a powerful elite would rain down on anyone who could do it.

And yet, the Germans continued to try to build an atom bomb that could only work if he was correct.

So the idea that Einstein's theories are only supported by a political conspiracy is nonsense.
We know that when a political conspiracy tried to oppose them, it failed.

Is there any way to get you to understand the difference between the tidal bulge and a tidal wave?
