What is this object trapped inside a piece of sandstone?

What is this object trapped inside a piece of sandstone?

I cut this sandstone rock open the other day and found this cavity inside with these layers if sandstone inside surrounding a stick like object also made of sandstone.  Does anyone have any idea how it formed?  It was found in eastern Kentucky Carboniferous layers.

Thank you RD!  I didn't think it looked right to be a fossil.  And yes where I found it is iron rich all along the creek.   :D

When I first saw it the thought that leapt to my mind, before I read @RD's link was that it looks like a geode of some description.

Reaction-diffusion does shape living things, so the patterns/forms created can look biological.
