As winter approaches each year (in Scotland) I observe large flock of geese (noisily) flying off during the day. How come when spring comes I see and hear very few returning. Are they returning by stealth under darkness? [???]

A similar thing happens around here; the geese on the wildlife reserve make a very noisy autumn departure, flying overhead, but somehow they arrive unannounced and incognito!

Maybe they return via a slightly different route, thus making first landfall further north or south, east or west than the departure route.
