Just heard you on 702.
Regards to the railway line, I believe that engineers use something called a flaming rope which is literally a steel rope flooded with gas and set on fire beside the steel track---this expands the track before it is welded.

Hi Daniel,
Yes, that technique was used, and it may still be used sometimes, though I think it's more common to pretension the rail using hydraulic rams these days. I suppose it's bit like tuning a very large piano!
