Title: What's cooking tonight?
Post by: LeeE on 08/09/2010 22:07:24
Just a quick thread for people to post what they're cooking (not just eating, so please don't post about McDs etc.)

I've currently got a sweet & sour sausage casserole bubbling away in my slow-cooker.  Smells good, so far  [;D], and I'll be eating it whatever it actually tastes like (because I hate throwing food away).

Proof of the err... casserole... to follow...

roast veggie curry - I am afraid I am addicted.  Every vegetable I can roast and some I can't with ludicrous amounts of every spice I can lay my hands on. Latest iteration had juniper berries and nigella seeds  - gave it a fruity and aromatic taste.  And each time I make curry or chilli I make it a bit hotter than last - this way lies madness.  I do hope the latest claims for health benefits of turmeric are true.

btw - nigella seeds are weird.  I gathered some from garden - they taste just like the old fruit flavours in the sweets I had as a kid (slush puppy etc.) The plants look great through the early summer too.

Tasted quite good actually, but the sausages, didn't have much texture to them.  One to try again.

The roast veggie curry sounds nice.

Order some chilli sauce, and add it to get a little zing.......

www.firefoods.co.uk for an example here. I would love to try the infinity chilli, but have had experience of pure Capsicum oil that I got once at work. 10ml of a clear liquid arrived, sealed inside a glass bottle, vacuum sealed inside a polythene bag, and that inside another 2 bags. You could smell the chilli from outside the box, and I had burning eyes for a few days afterwards, even after washing numerous times with abrasive soaps to try to remove all traces of that oil. I was not going to smell or taste something that came with warning labels about it being a hazard in pure form. It was diluted into 20l of oil to make it more managable, still not something I wanted to taste.

I made a chilli with scotch bonnets once - most disappointing.  Very hot, naturally, but no taste at all; more of a sensation verging on pain on lips and tongue rather than the lovely "hot" feeling of other chillis.  I have some chilli vodka infusing with home grown habeneros - I think that might be ready for christmas.  already thinking of cocktail with sloe gin for a malaysian sweet fruit chilli taste - and the hangover from hell

What is it with men and hot food?? I can't enjoy a food if it burns me! I like warm spicy foods but not hot, otherwise there is no taste, well not to me anyway  [:)]

Tonight I am doing roasted veggies with *seasoned chicken, on and some wedgey chips for my sons as they will pass out if asked to eat veg  [:D]

*denotes being seasoned with whatever seasoning I fancy when opening the cupboard!

You can come try some of Mrs Govender's curry, that are available in a few styles, from mild ( no taste) to hot ( some taste) and of course the house special, 3bite ( Hot to bite, hot to swallow and keep the loo roll in the freezer overnight).

I like the bunnies, and the sambals are nice garnish too.

I made a huge stock pot of homemade chicken tomato vegetable soup with rice pasta barley and loads of carrots, peas, onions, garlic, and lovely fresh herbs and seasonings... It was and is delightful soup/goulash... very tasty, but the problem is I still seem to be cooking for 5 people instead of one or two persons...

That sounds very nice Karen.

Although I live on my own I always cook 4-6 servings, depending on whether I'm using my slow cooker or my large casserole pot, and freeze what I don't eat straight away.  Cooking some basmati rice and zapping the frozen stuff in the microwave then only takes 6-7 minutes for later meals, with very little washing up needing to be done  [:)]

Hi Karen:- Whups!! - nearly went onto a history of me then.

No, I've not always lived on my own, but that isn't a factor in the quantity that I cook - the cooking aspect is more down to satisfying a number of disparate requirements.
