Title: How do I label all the hydrogens and carbons on a tetracycline molecule please?
Post by: philthewineguy on 22/04/2021 19:09:57
Im having trouble labelling tetracycline with all the carbon and hydrogen sites. Im a bit of a newbie to Chemistry! Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I could find out how to label this molecule please?

By convention, the rings are labeled A to D and the carbons are numbered... well, they are labeled confusingly.

I'm not sure the tetracyclines are a good place to start learning chemistry

Thank you. I can see where the 22 carbons are but cant see how there are 24 hydrogens

The hydrogen atoms bonded to carbons are often omitted from the drawn structure, and are instead implied. This is the "bent line" representation or "skeleton formula"

Thank you. If im labelling all the hydrogen sites, I would just mark the hydrogens in the diagram instead of trying to draw 24 seperate ones?
