Cripes...I think you have to back to 2002 to see who the first newbies were...check the General Science Forum and just head to the very last page...and then check all the other forums too to see if you get any earlier posts !!..I would do it for you but I'm in an absolutely ****ty ****ing pissed off rotten mood today (understatement !) and can't be arsed !!...

Neil - I know the feeling I'm in one of those ***ty ****ing pissed off rotten mood today too. My computer is *****ng up and I don't know how to fix it, and the Dell technician was no help at all!!!!!

Carolyn...I empathise and sympathise and other 'thise' orientated words !!..I've got a dell laptop...the fact that I now use a PC from a different brand speaks volumes for what I think of DELLS after sales service !!!

Thanks Michael - Here goes.
From my shared documents file, I open up one of my folders (these are all microsoft word documents). I click on one of the documents to open and the Microsoft Word Licensing box comes up and that's it. Nothing happens. When I try to click on the X in the upper right hand corner, it goes back to my desktop, but the MS License box stays. I then try to restart from the start menu, then I get a box that says "Program Not Responding, click end now", then the computer freezes up. I have to turn it off manually. After I manually turn it off, sometimes it will automatically turn itself back on, sometimes I have to do it manually. All of this also happens if I try to open MS Word from my desktop and/or the start menu.
We own a small air conditioning business. I do all of my proposals, contracts and invoices on MS Word. (Yes I know I should use a better program, but I'm lazy and comfortable with it). Of course I haven't backed anything up since the beginning of the year (again lazy). Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly if you use your pc for work you should never rely on the internal hard drive as a safe place to keep important docs etc you should get your self a small removable external USB hard drive which you can backup and copy everything that's important to. Hard drives crash all the time and the use of data recovery firms is expensive.
BEFORE YOU TRY ANYTHING BACK UP EVERY PIECE OF IMPORTANT DATA ONTO A CD OR DVD
Its sounds like the programs corrupt, what version of windows are you running. To end the program if your running xp you can click ctrl-alt del at the same time to gain access to the windows task manager and under the applications tab it should show you what applications are running, highlight and click end task.
If you have XP click on the start menu move across and click on the run command, in the box that comes up type in WINWORD.EXE if it loads with no problems then a file is corrupt called NORMAL.DOT all you have to do is find it and delete it (a new one will be created).
Next if it still don’t load type in chkdsk in the run box and click ok, windows will then look for errors and repair corrupted files (this often works)
There are various ms word repair programs which can be downloaded free of charge, in Google type in ms word repair.
Use system restore which can be accessed from the start Menu /programs /accessories /system tools /system restore or from the control panel. Restore your pc back to a date when ms word worked
Is your version of word part of a package like office, if so place the office disk in your cd drive and reload word or the whole package? Newer versions of office also have a repair facility so you don't have to reload the complete package. IF it says save settings say yes.
Borrow a friend’s copy of word or office and load it onto your pc
AS A LAST RESORT
You should have a dell reload disk containing all the programs on the pc as a last resort this disk will let you reload your pc putting all the software back on the pc like it was the first day you bought it, but back up everything important passwords docs etc as you will probably lose them .if not there should be a backup folder on your pc containing windows setup files ,all the programs installed on your pc and all your drivers see if you have a copy of the ms word setup file in there.

Hi Michael - I have Windows XP and Microsoft Works Suite 2004. This was installed after I purchased computer.
This is what I've done. First I did the run winword.exe. The following popped up.
"Word failed to start correctly last time. Starting word in safe mode will help correct or isolate a startup problem in order to successfully start the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode".
I clicked no and it froze again. Next i did the chkdsk. Something popped up rather quickly and then it went back to my desktop. Next I did the system restore and dated it back to the last time word worked. That didn't correct the problem. Next I went to the control panel, to the add/delete programs. I clicked on MS Word. It said click here if it isnt running properly. I did and it had me re-install the program. It continued to have the same problem. I tried the run winword.exe again. That safemode screen came up again and this time I clicked on yes start safe mode. It had me re-register the program online, but Didn't solve any of the problems. I did not do the normal.dot. Do I need to do that?
While this problem is going, on hitting ctrl, alt, delete isn't doing anything. Windows task manager comes up, but it doesn't show anything running.
Should I google the ms word repair now?
By the way, this computer was purchased in June of 05. Less than a year ago.
I hope I'm making sense. Thanks for your help and patience.

You are making sense and you are having problems.
Dont delete the normal.dot that only works if it started normally after typing in winword.exe
There MAY be a dodggy entry in the registry.
The procedure that reinstalls it as a repair can leave dodgy entries in the registry, so try a simple uninstalling without repair and then restart your machine before reInstalling. IF IT ASKS TO SAVE SETTINGS SAY NO you will have to re-register sorry. Sometimes they have to use special tools to remove all entries from the registry, I could tell you how to do it manually but if you mess up your machine would need a complete reload including windows . Which by the way would be my next step for me as i back things up and dont use the pc for work like you and a reload only takes 15-minutes for me .
If that fails then try a repair utility from the net, dont purchase one there should be some that are free to download.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THERE IS NO IMPORTANT STUFF THAT COULD BE DELETED before you do anything.

The version of word which comes with works is different to the version which comes with office which i use and i'm not quite sure but the difference shouldnt make any difference with fixing your problem, i wish i had your machine infront of me.
May as well try everything,if after a fresh reinstall it still dont work search for normal.dot there maybe more than one and they may be hidden so tick the box in the search options thats lets you search for hidden system files. dont delete them but rename them,then see if the program works . (change a letter in their name so they can be easily changed back if it dont work.

last year my pc was going through a spate of crashes,ect,this went on for about a week.i was pulling my last few hairs out,nothing worked,i was just going to re-format it all,opened the drive to put in a cd to save my stuff,and the windows disk was in there.
i thought (among other things)it cant be that simple,a whole week of foul language and red face, it was ![:(!]
its the drugs,y-know.

Good, but not perfect.
I now use OpenOffice, and I do like it, but all migration has its limits, and there are always going to be subtle formatting errors in moving documents from one word processor to another.
Now if only OpenOffice would also read my very old WordStar, MultiMate, and DisplayWrite IV documents.

This is not going to help at all, but I used Openoffice for a while and then one day, it could not do a task which was so important that I decided to uninstall it...I know that I can not remember the task in hand but my point is that it does have it's limitations....somwehere, just like george has mentioned above.

Michael - Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. I tried everything you suggested and I still couldn't get it to work. My guess is somewhere I've missed a step or two. I finally convinced someone @ Dell that something was wrong. They're saying a fan is bad and needs replacing, but they don't know why I can't get into Word. They're sending a technician out today to replace fan, so I'm gonna pick his brain and see if he can solve the Word problem as well.
Ray - LOL. I checked all my disk drives to make sure there wasn't anything there. That would be embarrassing for the tech to come all this way to find I hadn't removed something from one of the drives. That's something I would do. I owned a restaurant a few years ago. My refridgerator stopped working so I called the repairman - it was unplugged.

The only think I would say is that goalposts constantly move.
I used to have OpenOffice 1.1.4, and was not at all happy with it; but moving to OpenOffice 2.0 has at very least much improved the stability, and generally more comfortable. Not saying that even now it is perfect, just that one should always keep reappraising the current state of play.
Also like some of the features in AbiWord (like being able to click on a word, and go straight into WikiPedia), although that really is still too unstable.

If you are getting overheating problems, I could well imagine that you are also getting disk corruptions. That chkdsk is playing up may be another indication of problems, although it may simply be that as soon as you load a program it causes the machine to fail because of memory of processor errors due to the overheating problem.
Plan for the possibility that you may have to reformat your hard disk (but only after the new fan is installed, and everything in known to be working OK on the hardware side).

YAY! My computer is working again. I spoke with a young friend of mine who works on computers and he walked me through the repair. He said he has had alot of problems with Norton antivirus and works programs. First we went to add/delete and did a repair on Word. Then we disabled Norton for a few minutes. Then we disabled MS Works from the Norton Antivirus, and then we enabled Norton again. That did the trick. I didn't lose any of my documents. Thanks for the help everyone!!!![:D]
