Title: From Liquid goodness to Solid Goodness !!
Post by: neilep on 05/09/2005 23:05:27
This is question No 571 in a series of 1478 baby related questions:

For the first few months baby just drinks milk and water etc...is it because tummy can not handle solids ?...if so, then I gather that liquid goodness is enough yes ?...then why eat solids at all ?...and could us grups (grown ups) also get along quite well with just liquid goodness ?

Cheers [;)]

Neil
I know having a new baby can be very stressful. But I take it from your post you've started drinking.[V]
You obviously need help, and Neil I’m here to help you.[:D]

1. Drink is ok if taken in moderation.
2. There is nothing wrong with the odd liquid lunch, but you should really try to eat   something during the day.
3. Don’t drink gin it will only make you depressed compounding your problems
4. Don’t pop down the pub for the day, and now the pubs are open all night a 24 hrs   bender is a no no.  Try to limit yourself to an hour or two.
5. if you still have problems and just can't stop drinking, send me your money and I will have a drink or two for you.[:D]

Seriously though there always going on about how we need a daily dose of fiber to maintain our good health. So I doubt it would be a good idea. Then again you could always liquidize your cereal.

Oh well, the pub sounds good when you get to miss changing the goop that comes out the other end.

Babies grow very fast in their first few days, but they need to nurse ever few hours. If you get 3 to 4 hours in between nursing, you count your blessings. After a few months they can start to take some solid food. This takes much longer to digest, and the kid starts sleeping longer. The mom then wakes up the kid because she is hurting and needs to be nursed.

About this time, mom's give up on nursing either from work pressure or the inconvience of it. Health professionals though, keep finding healthy reasons to nurse as long as you can, both from nurishment and from psycological view points.

Martin Luther nursed until 3 even though there were additional kids in between. Modern life is rough on that. My wife nursed kids up to about two years before they lost interest in snuggling up to mom. They are still very well behaved and respectful of their mother. It is a dying practice, when even giving normal birth is becoming inconvient.

I would of thought the best time for a mum to give up breast feeding would be when
them teeth start coming through[:D]

Absolutely right Michael...teeth indicate avoidance...what ever is being sucked eh ?...errrrhhmm !!....but that's when the wonder of expressing milk comes into effect. Every evening, I ring a bell and in comes wifey wallowing along...I stick some malteasers in a tray and while she's chomping merrily I'm expressing her milk for baby's night time consumption !...and that's where I come in for the night shift.

Thanks also David for the facts.....Baby currently feeds every 1.5 - 2 hours....sometimes we get a 3 hour break...but it's very early days and we find his routine is shifting all the time.

The premise for my original post was though, is it possible to live on a liquid food rather than solids ?...I don't mean take a roast chicken and liquidise it !...I mean , if a  liquid preparation had all the proteins, nutrients and vitamins a body needs, could one effectively live on that ?

It might be possible, but your digestive system would run though the liquid stuff very fast producing a spike in blood nutrients that might be hard to handle. Blood sugar spikes cause drowsyness, and is very bad for diebeties sufferers. We were designed to take in nutrients in a slower method. Like your momma said: "eat your vegtables, you need the fiber".

about liquids: considering unborn bub's nourishment bits come in via blood in cord, as well as swallowing amniotic fluid, mother's milk is the most solid food they've come across yet.
my daughter's poos became less liquid while she was still just drinking milk, so she was forming more solid waste matter from the milk. so her digestive system was going through changes.
then she started foods beyond milk. (it was summer here, so she first tasted mango, plum..lovely seasonal stuff)
i found that i should've whizzed up ALL food with tuns of water to a thin liquid (i did this only sometimes), so there was consistent progression from bmilk, because for the 1st 2 1/2 mths she often had pain pooing the more solid food (which i thought wasn't very solid).

about adults only having liquids: imagine our foods pulverised post-chewing. after we digest food it turns to sludge, so - not too far different from liquid diets.
most of us need to drink more water anyhow.
i like making fruit n veg juices.

I raised bees for a while and we were cautioned not to feed honey to very young infants as it contained some earth grown bacteria. I would make sure that most natural foods produced outside of mom were cooked for the first 3 months. And nursing also improves baby's resistance.

Those white things in your head are called teeth.  I'm sure they're there for a reason. ;p

I've oftened wondered why we feed babies solid food until they get teeth?  It seems to me that when you get teeth you should eat solid food and not before.  I believe we feed our babies solid (or mashed) food before they are ready, otherwise they would have had teeth when they were born.  Any ideas?
