Post by: stana on 26/11/2007 19:42:23

I think it depends on the amount of damage done. The body is pretty capable of repairing itself, up to a certain point.

It's generally NOT very advisable to mix drugs and alcohol. Depending on the 'mixture' and it's components and of course the amounts of both involved it could have a quite toxic effect on your body. Not something you'd want to just try out.

If you're taking part in any trial make sure you're fully informed as to wether you can drink alcohol or take any other medication in tandem.

If you take too much for your body weight you can overwhelm your liver and it could kill you. Now I don't mean you. I had a friend taking tylonol I believe equivielent to your parecetamol.. she was taking the required dosage on Doctors recommend but due to her size body weight and I guess long term use.. she woke up one morning felt sick.. in the afternoon felt horrible went to hospital and was dead by early am hours because it was more then her liver could take and it had become saturated with it like a sponge..

So I think there are a lot of conditions that weigh in here. Your body can do what it can, but too much and your body cannot cope and things can get really bad really fast. She had no idea she was sick!

I dont know if i have cirrhosis of the liver. A freind of mine does not drink, or take any form of drug, he believes that your natural defences are better than any tablet. He told me that any drug you take, it will damage your liver.

Now. I was wondering, if i take ONE paracetamol. Just one. My liver will have to work to break this tabet up, therefor causin the liver to strain/damage

My question is. Does my liver repair?   My skin repairs. My nails repair. My hair repairs. Does my liver?

As a physicist (rather than a biology/medical guy) I imagine that it's a matter of balence; if your body can repair (or flush) whichever organ at least as quickly as you're damaging (flooding) it, then you'll be okay... But if you're doing harmful stuff to it faster than it can cleanse/repair itself then the organ will be destroyed pretty quickly and you'll suffer the consequences.

Can a bio/med person verify or clarify this idea, please?

As an aside, not quite everything repairs itself: the microscopic hair-cells within the cochlea of the ear, and which are needed to amplify and sense sound, do not repair themselves in mammals (including humans), if damaged. Hence hearing loss due to very loud noise-exposure, or due to use of ototoxic drugs, can be permanent.

The liver is the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself if it is damaged. But prolonged damage will reduce the livers ability to do this. SO if you continually damage your liver it will not regenerate.
