   Are there existing observations of physical processes that would explain the hexagonal shaped craters on Mars, Mercury, Titan and Eros?

Hexagonal packing is characteristic of circular or near-circular objects (such as bee cells, chaldera and impact craters) close to one another, and also of convection cells in cooling magma - such as the Giants Causeway.
