Title: Can someone develop PTSD after stopping antipsychotic medications?
Post by: smart on 09/08/2018 13:54:46
Hello,

Is it possible for someone to develop complex post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms after going off forced or involuntary antipsychotic medicamentation for a long period of time?

Please comment!!   :)

Thank you.

I would argue that, in medicine, anything can happen. But in this case, cessation of antipsychotics after long-term use is likely to provoke side effects and other symptoms, at least transiently, and especially if the drugs are not weaned off carefully. These side effects can include anxiety symptoms and mood destabilisation, which might be what you are referring to.

Anti-psychotic drugs are the same as any other drug,  they change the chemical balance in the body which in turn then affects neurological process function.  A withdrawal of such medication causes a decrease of the drug in the bio-logical system, hence a fluctuation of chemical in the body and neuro-activity progressing from this . The rate of withdrawal in the bio-logical system,  playing a key role in how the person responds to the decrease .  Additionally the type and strength of drug , also playing a key role in the affect experienced by the person. The ''stronger'' the drug, the greater the adverse affect is from the  decrease of the drug from the bio-logical system.

Do you think it's possible for someone generally healthy to develop complex problems in interpersonal communication after having withdraw from atypical antipsychotics? I mean, could someone become traumatised from psychiatric therapy and start developing PTSD-like symptoms?

Thank you.

That's just a myth bro... It is not something being scientifically founded. It is the kind of magical nonsense that doctors will tell you to coerce you in accepting meds...

Thank you.

I did mean in reference to the addictive drugs, there is of course none addictive drugs that have very little affect on the body in terms of withdrawal symptoms. I can't say I have ever experienced withdrawal symptoms  from taking a paracetamol , if anything the withdrawal from nicotine is greater than the withdrawal of a paracetamol.  A hang over experience ,  is a far worse experience than taking a paracetamol as we all know, we take a  paracetamol to get rid of the hangover, alcohol having catastrophic affect on the body and neuro stable state , in the long term and short term.

Everything affects our organism. Surely, a hangover is extremely harmful but don't think you help yourself when you take pills while having a hangover. Even nonaddictive drugs influence our organism, especially our brain. I don't say you shouldn't take pills at all (think it's impossible). I became painkiller addicted because of my frequent headaches but now I'm trying to shorten taking meds. I always check for side effects (<<<LINK REMOVED>>>) before taking a decision whether to take a medicine or not.
