Title: How are sedatives cleared from my system?
Post by: Josie Moynihan on 19/01/2011 16:30:08
Josie Moynihan  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello Chris et al.,

I am due to have a tooth extracted under sedation, as opposed to GA, and was just wondering (in the middle of the night - as you do) which would be the best way to clear out any remaining sedative from my system?  Does sleeping 'use it up' or does exercise 'flush it out'?

Thanks - Josie

What do you think?

The sedatives will be cleared from your system by either your kidneys or your liver depending on the drug, or drug cocktail.

I believe the process is more or less done at a constant rate.  Exercise might help you keep alert, but there wouldn't be a lot of benefit from going home and watching your favorite video.
