Title: Why didn't the total solar eclipse strain my naked eyes at all?

I live in the path of totality and caught the eclipse on video. The whole time I looked at it without the protective glasses or protection of any kind. Not only did it not blind me, it didn't strain or hurt my eyes in any shape, way for form.

Looking directly at the sun is inherently hazardous and something one should never do. Just because it did not hurt does not imply it was safe to do so. I am sure you have seen the effect of direct sunlight through a lens setting fire to a piece of paper- now consider the same effect directed at the fragile retina at the back of your eye. Damage may have been done only to show later.

What is "it"?

If you were videoing the eclipse on your phone, and looking at the smartphone screen, that is quite safe for your eyes.
- I'm not sure that pointing your smartphone directly at the full Sun is very good for your smartphone
- But replacing your smartphone is easier than replacing your retina!
